My experience of social reform.

Old timers like me who have been around to witness the last 10 presidencies I certainly have some comments to share based on my past years of observation regarding human behavior and how that could relate to the future endeavors of our president elect who is a firm socialist practitioner believing in more government and levying additional taxes for the upper middle class and distribute the wealth among the poor by way of more social, health and welfare programs.

3 subjects will always stir controversies: religion, politics, and race. There is no right or wrong answers. I am only sharing with you a very important part of history through my very personal experience in an extreme socialist society.

I will rewind 40 years during my early childhood journey. The year was 1967 during the peak of Cultural Revolution in Canton, China. My wealthy family was already stripped of its wealth and distributed among the poor 18 years prior. The citizens had already lived 20 years into a socialist society where the government favored the majority of the masses, the poor. The educated, cultural and intellectuals were mostly executed, jailed, or reformed through labor camp. The poor and uneducated were recruited to lead while the rich were condemned and paraded through the public street as sinners. Some of my relatives were hung and executed by firing squads. Every household at that time were issued exactly the same amount of food, compensation and goods. Everyone had jobs in farms and factories. The hardest workers also got the same compensation from the government as the lazy workers. That year all crops were destroyed by rodent and pest. Chairman Mao did not foresee the need of a chemist since he killed them all so there was no one to make insecticide or rodent poison. He came up with an idea to motivate and inspire all his countrymen to eradicate the pest by offering bonus food vouchers in exchange for rodent captured and killed. The entire country was out trapping and killing cockroaches and rats. The great socialist plan worked only for a while until rodents became scarce. The people then began to harvest and raised them in homes so they can turn them in for more food vouchers.

Since lazy people get the same amount of food so why try harder. The government then put in place a supervisor overseeing every 4 workers to make sure that they all work hard. (It sounds like our infamous Cal Tran operation). It worked for a while until the supervisor began to take bribe from the 4 workers and the socialist government was burden with 5 lazy workers. The ripple effect echoed up the chain of commands and the entire country was non productive and did not even produce enough food feed its growing population since healthcare was free and families took advantage of the system by having many children since more kids meant more food vouchers. The government then got really smart then to come up with a ONE child law. We all know horror stories related to that. I remembered our family dog was lead to the kitchen one evening and he cried and my older 40 year old brother smashed his skull as the dog was pleading for his life. He was the family meal because we had not eaten for days. The erosion of an 18 year old socialist country was evident.

Now let me rewind another 18 years. It was the year of 1949. The country had faced with wars and economic recession. People lost their homes and jobs. There was shortage of food. The entire country wanted CHANGE. The country needed reform to healthcare, social program, and welfare to take care of the poor majority. Chairman Mao was articulate and charismatic. He spoke with the confidence like Martin Luther King or J. F. Kennedy. He was a socialist who believed in taking money from the rich and share that among the poor. As the country in distress the people needed a leader for CHANGE. He believed in social programs to heal a country in economic turmoil. He also believed his people will work very hard together in a way to express their gratitude for having free food, healthcare and welfare assistance and the country will become prosperous and live happily after. As Mao was elected as the Premiere there was happiness, chanting, emotion outburst, and a sense of salvation expressed by almost everyone. People paraded for days and poster and propagandas were everywhere to promote unity and work for a common goal. Everyone works hard for the country because the country was taking care of everyone.

The rich were not so happy along with their defeated presidential candidate knowing that the socialist system may potentially fail. They packed along with their precious possessions into many large ships by the thousands heading to the island of Formosa we now called Taiwan.

The text book theory of a socialist society in helping the poor is certainly a noble thing to do. The idea is to help them in such a way that they will get back on their feet and work their butt off in appreciating the government for lending a helping hand. This theory will inspire one out of 5 thousand out of the ghettos. What is the incentive for the welfare recipients when their daily needs are met? Socialist societies have all failed over the years.

I immigrated to this country with my mother. We worked in a sweatshop and refused to be on welfare or any government assistance. My mother said " we have both our hands and feet we are capable people". I lived in my car while attending college. I clean toilets to pay for my college tuition. She is 87 year old with no lauguage or vocational skill and never took a free penny from the government. The high school that I went to were full of welfare recipients and there is no incentive for them to get out of the system when food and money arrived on a regularly basis.

All countries in economic and war turmoil whether in the past or present wanted a leader who appeals to the people?s emotional need. Slogan for CHANGE along with a socialist overtone has prevailed for all mankind here and all across the globe.

We've been eating a shitburger deluxe for the past eight years(Colbert), what Bookie went through was a shit storm.

But as it's clearly evident in bkshpr's character... Out of shit grows roses.

My wife tried to articulate this complex socialist agenda of our president elect the other night. It is very difficult to express in a layman term. I hope that my personal experience helped to explain some the long term implication of the socialist idea. Socialist idealogy without democracy is Communism.

More government means less productivity. When did our government executed any projects on time and under budget? The time to plan check a set of plan at the city took more time for the architect to design, engineer and the builder to build it.

Look at the devastation and the remnants of Katrina. Private sectors have rebuilt and sold new homes while the government has not even begun the demolition process of the wreckage.

Less government means less laziness and less wasteful of tax payers' hard earned money.

I saw on 20/20 that Brad Pitt contributed more to the Katrina victims than the government.

I find that impossible to believe.

BK, I really respect all you have been through.

That said, I (of course) have some quibbles.

First of all, a 4% increase on the top tax bracket hardly moves this country from quasi-capitalism to socialism. If you look at the historic tax tables I posted, the proposed new rate is well within the range of historic tax rates and is not something extraordinary. Now, if you want to talk about government money going buy stocks in banks, we might have something to discuss re capitalism v. socialism, but recall who was in charge at the time.

As for Katrina, that is a good model of why people should elect candidates whose primary goal is to hire people to serve the people, and not hire people who sole qualification is fidelity to the President, or in the case of Louisiana, fidelity to their own pocketbook. Let's compare Katrina with the repair of Interstate 10 after the Northridge quake. That project came in early and the contractor was paid an early completion bonus. Quality in, quality out.

While I understand the desire of many people for "less government" (what does that mean?), we are no longer an agrarian society where complete self reliance is even possible. I would challenge anyone to get through a single day without a government benefit of some kind.

Did you eat today? Odds are good that the food traveled to you on an interstate highway funded by federal funds, was grown / raised with water that was transported via a federal water project, and was allegedly inspected (or is at least regulated) by either the FDA or the Agricultural Dept (and if you haven't read "The Jungle," I would highly recommend it), among other ways the government is touches even the most basic aspects of our lives.

Frankly, I would rather live in a society that, for example, dictates minimum building standards for housing than one that does not. That is one reason why a 5.4 earthquake in SoCal does little structural harm, but in Iran or Pakistan causes great loss of life.

BK, That is a moving story, and I see how experiences such as those would give you strong political convictions. I am curious about something implied by the concerns you expressed, do you really worry that Obama and the Democrats will enact policies even remotely similar to Communist China?

I think BK is alluding to the destruction of self-reliant mindset that socialism promotes. On the other hand, mortgage equity abuses and other forms of getting something for nothing, including the banking bailout, bakruptcy-remote vehicles, securitisations, etc also qualify.

I don't know the answer. I think the answer is to not get too hung up in "isms", but rather elect smart people. Not smart in the sense of "I know how to swindle $100m", but smart in the sense of "I know how to balance decency, success, and happiness". Both candidates were way better than W in that department, so it is a big improvement.

Here is another gloomy take on what lies ahead by someone deeply impacted by socialism

What an amazing personal odyssey. I spent my early childhood in Taipei listening to my grandparents talk about the good old days back on the mainland, with their big mansion overlooking the ocean, the tennis courts, big American cars with drivers, and all of that was gone thanks to Chairman Mao. The first time my grandfather went back to China since he left in 1949 was in the early 80s and when he returned, he lamented that the communists had made the Chinese people lazy. My grandfather had always marveled at the industriousness of the Chinese, he oversaw the construction of an airfield for US B-29 bombers that was built by Chinese workers in a matter of days with only hand tools. Fortunately, China gave up socialism beginning in the 80s and they are now becoming wealthy beyond their wildest dreams.

The Chinese adopted Capitalism, but last I heard they were still COMMUNIST. I would prefer a capitalistic democracy with social programs over a communisitic government that allowed capitalism any day of the week.

This is very personal for me, but I want to share what welfare meant for some of us. My father was very violent and abusive. I can't recall how many times, but there were many nights that my mom woke me up at 2:00 am to put me in the car she had packed up with what could fit in there besides me, her and the dog. My father controlled her money as well, so it was the government that would assist us with food stamps and a rent certificate.

It was so damn humiliating presenting that pink free lunch coupon. My mom always worked and we didn't stay on welfare long and during the times we were, we were in abject poverty. But it was better to have powdered milk, other people's clothes and an apt in the ghetto than to live with wealth and violence. My mother taught me to work hard, to never get myself in a position where I needed the government to get by.

For some crazy reason she always went back so I went back and forth from welfare to attending Montessori. I was 11 years old during the 1980 primary and I asked my dad why he was supporting Reagan (he gave to his primary, but never paid his child support and sat in the front row of the Catholic church every Sunday). I was truly curious as to why he supported this man so fervently with his words and his dollars. He told me "because he's going to get the f*&&((( c*%$ off welfare." Despite everything that he had done, I still loved my father dearly at this point, but this was the moment I became a Democrat.

Not everyone on welfare used it as temporary leg up, but let us not forget that it was Clinton that got people off welfare and working. I will not deny people who are in need some help and if the government can give people the opportunity to get on their feet, then I will gladly pay my taxes to help them. Someone's tax dollars in the '70's helped me when I needed it most.

And BK, I apologize for leaving this out of my response, but I do want you to know that I very much respect and admire your views and experience. It just goes to show how much our upbringing and our personal experiences shape how we view the world and utlimately some of our thoughts on how the world works. I know you and Mrs BK are worried about Obama being a socialist and the thoughts of socialism scare you, but you are an American in America. It doesn't get much better than this, even if we have a black president who thinks government can govern well :)
