Move to a home next to a school, but might not get in?

NEW -> Contingent Buyer Assistance Program

Started dropping off my interest cards yesterday.  I learned that my first grader may not get to go to my own neighborhood school.  I guess I am new to the public school system and didn't realize you might not get into your own school!  Also learned that they wont even notify me if she doesn't get in until 2-3 days before the first day of school.  How does one prepare their first grader for that?  Not a very nurturing way to start school IMO.

Also, what is crazy to me is that if a homebuyer is choosing a home because of a public school and paying a premium (we all know that all irvine public schools arent created equal as it relates to the cost of your home) you still might not get in!  That's crazy.  Do homebuyers know this?

I assume you bought in a new area? Or maybe one of the impacted school hoods.

That is the new reality.

And if you are doing after-school care, even if your kid gets into your chosen school, there may not be room for them in that school's after school program.

Please tell me this is Stonegate.  It would really make my Friday!  >:D >:D >:D

You have serious dislike for SG...

Haha.  Naa - I just like messing with SG b/c the people that buy/own there get so defensive about it.  Present company not included of course  ;D

Edit:  I actually do like Stonegate.  Really like the location - just wish it was built out a bit differently.  In fact, going over there today to abuse one of your pocket parks for a playdate.

It's interesting...personally I don't think Stonegate is that great...I just like the parks.  I drive past pretty much everything else.

If trends hold,  many schools will have multiple grade levels closed (4th and 6th grade was especially tight this school year).

Current year is shown at the bottom on the page.  Only 7 out of 22 were NOT closed on atleast one grade level.

2012 - year of the dragon
Expect large class sizes especially in Irvine and other Asian communities.

1999 & 2011 is when Asians pull the goalie.
Taiwan sure cares about having dragon babies.

Here is a sample demographic:
Taiwan live births
1998 ~ 271,450 live births
1999 ~ 283,661 live births
2000 ~ 305,312
2001 ~ 260,354

2010 ~ 166,886
2011 ~ 196,627
2012 ~ 234,599
2013 ~ 199,113http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_Taiwan

However, the live births in China do not show a higher birth rate during dragon years, probably due to their one child policy.

I expect the class of 2018 and 2030 is going to be big.  If someone has the data for the number of students enrolled in 8th grade for Irvine, and compare it to 6, 7, 9, 10, 11, it should show a higher class size.

interesting.

a friend of mine who is a dragon had his wife's mom forbid his wife (e.g. her daughter) from trying to have a kid that year.  Apparently she said there was something about 2 dragons of certain types in the same house being bad.
The Double Dragon Headache.
