If your kids are into Legos, you may want to try out the Lego Store's Lego Club event.
Each store (South Coast Plaza, Mission Viejo Mall, Downtown Disney) hosts a monthly event before the store opens. It starts at 9am on a Saturday (usually mid/end of the month).
The general format is there is a theme each month (Star Wars, Marvel Superheroes, Lego City, etc) and the kids have about 30 minutes to build something based on that theme (vehicles, castles, etc). There is a little trivia session about the theme at the beginning and then the kids break up into small groups to work on their builds. You can build one by yourself, or some kids team up and build together. At the end they can present it to everyone (not all kids are brave enough to do so, but most do and some are very entertaining).
We've been doing this off and on for some time now (I actually wonder why I forgot to post about this) and while there is a dominance of boys... my girl has been to one too for Lego Friends (that's the girl themed Lego sets where it's all girl stuff like a hair salon, pet store etc).
The cost is $25, but if you're a Lego VIP member, it's only $20. It's a pretty good deal because you get a Lego t-shirt and a goodie bag that usually has some small Lego set and coupons in it.
You do have to pre-register and the more popular themes fill up quickly.
This month's theme is Star Wars and because it is one of the more popular ones, they have two events for it this month, Sept 22 and Sept 29.
I won't tell you which one we'll be at because Trace and SoCal are still hunting me... but if you go to one and see a big oaf with his kid... that's probably me.
