Dear Friends and Patrons, It is with very mixed emotions that we announce the closing of La Vie en Rose Restaurant.  Our last day is the evening of Saturday, January 28th ? 10:00 p.m. After 27 marvelous years of award winning food, service and ambiance -my family and I have decided - it is time to turn the page. We have always considered La Vie en Rose as an extension of our home and family. We hope you, our friends and patrons, feel as we do. The relationships, friends and friendships we have made over the past 27 years will remain a cherished part of our past and integral part of our future. These are the memories that will never fade. We still have the month of January to see you all again.?

I was supposed to help the owner of La Vie En Rose to publish a recipe book some years back, but the project never made it past conceptual stage.  Louis is really nice, but he's getting old and probably just wanted to retire back to France.  I'm hoping that someone would buy the place and run it.  The Cellar in Fullerton was sold to new owners about 4 or 5 years ago (?) and they've done a pretty good job in maintaining it.

I worked at Brea Corporate Place from 1997-2006'ish, pretty close to this restaurant.  The owner and I go to the same doctor.  While working in Brea, the company held its holiday lunches at La Vie En Rose, The Cat and Custard Cup (La Habra), The Summit House (Fullerton), and other places.  Unfortunately, those large banquets usually involve mediocre lukewarm food, so I had to go back and try other dishes on the menu.  But in all honesty, restaurants like La Vie En Rose, The Cellar, and White House in Anaheim are more theme restaurants for the experience.  As a matter of fact the Cellar's decor was designed and built by the same guys who did Disneyland's Pirates of the Caribbean decades ago.  But the problem with these restaurants is the higher price, and customers usually go there for special occasions only.  The La Vie En Rose tried "movie nights" to attract regulars and the White House in Anaheim tried to remedy this by building a banquet hall, but it's still quite difficult in this economic environment.

The Boufords who owned Black Sheep Bistro in Tustin served excellent dishes, but again they faced the same problems with higher prices and customers only go there for special occasions.  They tried all kinds of stuff like cooking giant paellas on the patio, until the health department said NO, and offering less expensive takeaways which I loved dearly.  Whenever they offered cassoulet and short rib on pasta, I'd rush there after work to pick it up.  But ultimately they couldn't sustain the business and had to sell it to the current owners of Nana Jean's.  I heard from the wife-owner of Nana Jean's that the stress of running Black Sheep Bistro was quite heavy on the Boufords, and after they sold the place, they became much more relaxed and happier.

For those who miss Black Sheep Bistro's cooking, Chef Bouford does work occasionally as a guest chef for Nieuport 17 in Tustin.  You can contact them for their schedule, or check Rick Bouford's FB here:http://www.facebook.com/pages/Rick-Boufford/116869371765847

Nieuport 17 has followed in the footsteps of La Vie en Rose. It is closing its doors. The last meal will be served on March 31.

I've already made dinner reservations at Nieuport 17 around Valentine's day.  Sad that it's closing.

When Mr. Stox in Anaheim closed, they sold their recipes and wine to The Ranch Restaurant, which was supposed to feature some of Mr. Stox's dishes.  The Ranch is popular and difficult to get a table on weekends.  Has anyone been there lately?
