Just had a contractor walk out the door and disappear on us this weekend...

Have not had much luck with CL "contractors either.  Had a guy quote me $300 to fix my gazebo in my old house.  He then dropped some guy off with some tools and told him to patch it up with wood filler and caulk.  I was like WTF?!?  I said I wanted the wood replaced like we spoke about.  He then said he will get the wood and come back and left the worker there to start the 'tear down' of the rotted wood.
The guy did not start tearing down the bad wood and was on his cell in the front yard.  I was thinking this guy is going to bail and sure enough about 10 minutes later his buddy drove by and picked him up and they were gone.
Fast forward about 30 more minutes and the original contractor guy showed up and asked me where his guy was.  I told him I think he bailed since his buddy picked him up.  He looked deflated and asked if he can still do the work.  I should have said no and closed the door but I felt bad for him since he bought the materials.  Unfortunately I did not listen to my first thought.  He did a completely crappy job and it still is annoying to think about.  I guess you get what you pay for.

LOL

Dude must be on crack.

You might be right.  When my girlfriend saw him, she suspected that he appeared to be a meth or crack user.

Wait. You didn't give him any money, right??

hell no!  lol.  I won't pay anything until the work is done.

Not sure why he did what he did with the beginning of the story, but he probably ended up bailing b/c he saw the job and realized he couldn't fix it.  Shady.  And glad nothing else happened besides wasting your time.

that's exactly what I was thinking.  I had quotes ranging from $300 to $1500.  Him being the lowest.  I guess I shouldn't have gone with a low bidder.  Lol.  ;D  But yeah, wasted BOTH of my days where I could have found someone else.  The guy claims he lives in Yorba Linda and google location in craigslist ad was confirming that so I figured he wouldn't be shady than if I found a dude in Santa Ana or South Central LA.

Call me cynical, but I don't think he planned to fix it at all. He could have just been "casing the joint". Didn't come equipped. You couldn't get his Plate # if you needed to report him and he knew that ahead of time. Looked like a junkie. Maybe he needs a fix. Looking for goods to steal & pawn / trade. Drugs are a very powerful thing. Maybe the reason he works for himself is because he has a record and can not secure gainful employment elsewhere. Was he wearing long sleeves to cover track marks?

I prefer the yellow pages. Ads there aren't cheap so you know the company is more likely to want to stand by its reputation.

Unfortunately contractors have more leverage over home owners than vice versa as they can put liens on your home if there is a dispute.

Here's the thing. He claims he's using his friend's contractor B-license to operate.  I checked the number against socal's contractor's website and it checks out ok.  When I called the number, no one picked up.  I would think that if anyone is operating a side job under someone else's license, that it would be illegal and they could go after you.

Now, see, I was told by the CSLB that two people can not share the same contractor's license. They said that is like 2 people sharing 1 driver's license. I called them about this issue a few years ago as a sub told me the same thing. In that case, they requested I forward all his info to them & they set up a sting operation to nab him. They do these all the time.

you need to get rid of your girlfriend, she has bad judgement. an early indicator of things to come.
