So I was reading reddit and saw this.
The first comment is how an Ivy League school picks applicants:

"I work in the Development (fundraising) office at an Ivy League University. Everyone assumes that family money has something to do with admissions at institutions like these, but I didn't realize the extent until I started working here. Although our officers are instructed to tell the parents of applicants that Development and Admissions have no contact, every year my team is given a contrary assignment: for every applicant, we need to look up all of their alumni relatives, and write a report on their relatives giving history to the school, current wealth, and potential for future giving. These reports go to the Admissions office to be included in the applicant's file."
