IRVINE ? Irvine Unified students came in first in the state in the recently released Common Core math tests and second in the English tests when compared with other large school districts in California.

The Irvine Unified School District had 74 percent of its 31,392 students meeting or exceeding standards in the math test, the highest among districts with at least 25,000 students, according to an Irvine Unified analysis released this week.

In English, 77 percent of the students met or exceeded standards ? the second-highest-ranked district in California. The highest scorer in English among similarly sized districts was San Ramon Valley Unified in Danville, at 81 percent.

?I am incredibly proud of Irvine Unified students? outstanding performance,? Superintendent Terry Walker said in a statement.

The only other Orange County district to rank in the top 10 statewide in either category among the larger districts was Saddleback Valley Unified ? seventh place for both math and English, according to the Irvine Unified review.

The California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress tests were given in grades three through eighth and in 11th grade.

The tests, aligned with the new Common Core curriculum and test for critical thinking, are much tougher than previous exams. More than half of the California students who took the exams failed to meet standards, which measure whether students are on track for college.

Orange County students fared better: 53 percent passed the English test and 45 percent passed the math test.

Irvine Unified also had the highest scores in both math and English among all school districts in Orange County, according to an Orange County Register review of test data.

Wow, #2 out of 47?  Really?  you do realize they looked at "large" school districts.  LAUSD, Oakland, Santa Ana, etc and they still came in #2?  Those other 963 districts don't count...

Wasn't there some posters who said their kids were having problems with Common Core math?

#26percenters

Here's the 2015 CAASSP test results, Grade 11 for IUSD</a>, 24% of the students don't meet the standard for English.
Math? LOL, Grade 11, 35% don't meet the standard.  At grade 11, over  1 in 3 are not showing grade level mastery indicating future readiness for college level math courses.

Are there any places that will tutor kids for common core?  I think Kumon doesn't have this.. or does it?

Cupertino Union has only classes from KG - 8 under its umbrella. Thats why its 11th grade data is empty !! grade 9 through 12 fall under FUHSD (Fremont union High school district).  The score for 11th grade for FUSHD is way higher than IUSD . For eg: mean scale score for FUHSD for math is 2772.0 while for IUSD its 2670.0 .

It doesnt make sense to compare apples to oranges.

Common Core skills are more related to technique than memorization offered by most Irvine tutoring places. Most kids should pick up the techniques for complex text analysis (aka chunking, no joke) from their teachers. Otherwise, I better start tutoring if the students aren't learning it here.
