I don't know why I get upset when someone mentions trailer parks in Irvine.  I guess I have lived here so long that when I think of trailer parks, I think of UCI student housinghttp://disorientuci.pbworks.com/Irvine-Meadows-West-trailer-park
and places where grandma could afford to live.  It irritates me when people say they don't want to sent their kid to the same kid where a potential classmate might live in a trailer.

When I was a high school student in Irvine, many of my classmates lived on the El Toro base.  This did not impact the quality of education that I received nor did it lesson the test scores of the school.  My school was still ranked as one of the best public schools in the state, if not the nation, despite having a significantly larger percentage of the lesser academically inclined minority students than what you might see today.

Judging from your grammar, I'd say it did have an impact.

Uh Oh.  I've been had.  I better tell that big nosed vice-principal that it didn't matter that I attended the best public high school in the state of California.  It made no difference.

(for the record I didn't have any classes with the people from the "base".  I guess it's all up to the parents to teach their children well).

Or like graphrix always likes to say:

"It's not the schools, it's the parents!"

We'll see what he's saying once he has his own kids.

Not to mention that when you compare peer groups (like Asians to Asians or whites to whites) at Beckman and Northwood --- Beckman scores higher.  So that tells me Beckman is doing something seriously right.

So the Beckman kids get as good (or better) academics while also going to school in an environment which better approximates the demographics of the real world outside the Irvine bubble.  And that's not a bad thing to prepare them for the rigors of college.

I've noticed that as well.  The only reason why Beckman's average API score is lower than Northwood's average API is because of TUSD's Hispanic / Latino demographic which (with no racial discrimination intended) seems to score lower than Irvine's Hispanic / Latino demo.  This is true also, when comparing between other high schools, as well as when comparing other Irvine to Tustin Middle Schools.  Looking at the average API is not enough, and when you read the demographic-by-demographic breakdowns, you realize that it could be argued that Beckman may actually be a better school than Northwood, if you are solely basing your argument on API scores.

The same reasoning applies to the district wide API score, which IUSD is currently boasting about on its home page.  While Beckman, Pioneer, Myford, and Hicks (and as IHO referrers to those schools as, part of the Tustin Ranch West Irvine Unified School District) perform exceptionally well, being either on par with or better than Irvine schools, because TUSD serves school in the inner-city Tustin area (Tustin High, etc.), the low scores from those schools have a immense impact on District wide API scores, which in turn, makes Irvine API look better, because they don't serve those types of areas.

patstar, that is so funny.  where in the "real world" is the population demographic 1/3 asian, 1/3 hispanic, and 1/3 white?

only a few areas of SoCal, I would bet!
