IRVINE ? A ninth-grade student at an Irvine high school was arrested Wednesday after a classmate was stabbed on the school?s campus, police said.
About 12:30 p.m., Irvine Police responded to Woodbridge High School after reports that a male student had been stabbed by another student, police said.
The student who was stabbed, also a freshman at the high school, was conscious and breathing when officials arrived on the scene. He was transported by amublance as a trauma patient in serious condition to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, said Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Steve Concialdi.
The suspect was identified as a freshman male, according to police.
Following the incident, officials said the teen fled the scene on foot. He was found and arrested at his nearby residence at approximately 1:10 p.m., police said.
Neither student?s name is being released because they are juveniles, according to Farrah Emami, spokeswoman for the Irvine Police Department.
The incident reportedly stemmed from an argument earlier Wednesday in gym class over a cellphone, Emami said.
Students at Woodbridge High School were on their lunch break at the time of the incident. The school was not locked down, and the suspect was detained before the end of the lunch hour.
School resource officers and detectives investigated the campus and found a knife thought to have been used in the stabbing. Officers also notified nearby schools of the violence.
Police said the incident appears to be isolated.
