"the 100 block of Eats Yale Loop" - hope that wasn't written by an Irvine schools graduate :)

OCR is notorious when it comes to spelling and grammar. They did not hire me for their Chief Editor position because I was over qualified.

I feel that the family should give the man a Hummer instead of a gun. This way, he won't get lost around town. And you don't get into as much trouble if you manslaughter someone with a car than using a gun. ;)

You're right, they totally should have waited until he shot someone before calling out a paramilitary force.

Was a SWAT team necessary then because the IPD is too incompetent to deal with this scenario!?!? I guess IPD doesn't see much "action" but I didn't think it was this bad.

All snarkiness aside, "man with gun in bushes" tells me I will need a team with experience/training dealing with a sniper. Your average patrol officer probably doesn't meet that standard.

Hmm, I just read about the plastic pellet drive-by shootings. Stupid kids.

SWAT team is from the County of Orange. IPD is not trained to handle crisis. Irvine is becoming a populated city and the department used to writing traffic citations and arresting chiplifters is not ready to deal with escalating crime. The department has no experience dealing with horrific crime scene and relied on Santa Ana CSI to process crime scene evidence.

Irvine is a relatively small area to have experience the recent crime wave just during the past year. Proper zoning to eliminating businesses associated with blue collar trades such as bars, strip clubs, auto repair chop shops, manufacturing and etc drastically minimized crime by discriminating against the lower income population.

Even though the wave of crimes recently jumped the crime ratio should still be relatively low due to the high population.

There may be more to the situation than what the article reported. It just seemed a bit excessive the way it was written about.

1. woman calls IPD about dad gone missing (which he has done before)

2. IPD sends out cops and helicopters to look for him and find him in the bushes

3. they bring out a crisis negotiator but the man yells that he has a gun and fires into the ground

4. SWAT team is called in

Maybe it's better to err on the side of caution, but it just seems to me that in the last few years SWAT gets involved too quickly, too often ... and if you've ever played GTA you know it's a bitch when that happens.

How about the helicopter that was needed for this?

I was browsing the IPD adult arrest log and it seems that at least they are pretty good at busting potheads, drunk drivers and bad (unlicensed) drivers. No wonder they were out of their element in this situation.

SWAT team for schools, sound like a fair trade. :)

Not a fair trade at all because I bought a house for my daughter in Irvine so she can attend school there.

645 arrests in a month and that is a safest city! Most of them were driving intoxicated, doped out, drunk, or without a license.
