2. Irvine, Calif.
> Violent crime per 1,000 people: 0.55 (5th lowest)
> Poverty rate: 12.3% (9th lowest)
> Adult population graduated from high school: 95.7% (2nd highest)
> Credit rating: not rated
> Population: 212,982

Irvine has a violent crime rate of just 0.55 per 1,000 people, the fifth lowest among the major cities on our list. The city is also among the best 10 for home vacancy, unemployment, median income and high school graduation rates. In 2008, CNN Money rated it the fourth-best place to live in the U.S. According to Craig Reem, director of public affairs and communications, ?We are seeing a gradual improvement in our local economy that allows us to move from recession ready, to recovery ready. The City Council plans conservatively: This past fiscal year (2010-2011), we outperformed our budget expectations by nearly $14 million.?

Virginia Beach, VA was number one. No Santa Ana or John's Creek in the top 10. :D

You always crack me up!

IHO... what Irvine was incorporated in 1971 and Johns Creek in 2006?    Man.. you are hopeless and you are never going get it. Irvine is already well known and crowded like gold is today and Johns Creek is an emerging city under the radar just like Irvine was a desirable place to live 15 years ago.

I loved what Irvine was in the past.. but not what Irvine is today. Isn't that what everyone saying in the "Why is there so much emotions towards Irvine?"thread started by Traceimage?

IHO, I know both areas intimately well. You've never been here.... so how would you know?

Relax Panda... I'm just doing a coast-to-coast poke... don't pitch if you can't catch.

So in 15 years JC will be on the 24/7 Wall Street list? Will it have motorcourts then too?  ;)

If this city is so well run, why is there a squatter camp on Harvard and Alton?

I can't wait until IPD starts shooting the tear gas into that place, and then finally, the anarchy can begin. I feel sorry for all of you who bought those shitty stucco boxes in Woodbury. Those paper thin walls will provide little defense against anything more than a 9mm round.

So you have somewhere to stay... Hotel Panda.

I'd worry more about zombies than a police state... Woodbury is like a Hometown Buffet.

No one is smart enough over there to start a website forum.  ;)

So there's no Occupy movement over in Atlanta?

It's not overly difficult to reinforce your home's likely entry points with ballistics protection , but fortifying your home only works for something like a drive-by.  If sh*t hits the fan and armed folks were to storm your home, staying at a fortified location is eventual suicide (see:  last stand of the Symbionese Liberation Army in LA, 1974).  You need to plan for escape routes with provisions/munitions/etc and places to stay away from urban areas, not staying in your house to exchange several thousand rounds of fire and eventually getting yourself killed.

It's still possible to buy 5 acre lots out in 29 Palms for few thousand dollars, or smallish fixer upper house on 5 acres for under $20,000 there.  Depending on the soil condition, you may be able to easily bury supply barrels there for emergencies.

Just passed by the squatter camp, and saw some people playing guitar. A guy in a lifted pickup truck got pulled over (I think for honking his horn in a "quiet zone"). The guys playing guitar were heckling the IPD officer, telling him to let the guy go, it's a new year, etc.

Tensions are rising. Things are bound to explode.

When it does, I hope all of you have stockpiled ammo and potatoes. Worth way more than gold at that point.

Santa Ana would fail in the 3 judging criterias: poverty, high school graduates and credit rating. Should theses be the right criterias for determining the best run cities?

Potatoes do not have long shelf life.  If your goal is to store food for emergencies, try Mountain House #10 cans.  They're freeze-dried and will store for up to 25-30 years under ideal conditions.  Don't forget to tape a few manual can openers to the boxes.

Costco also sells emergency food kits that may be cheaper:

IMO after observing Katrina, I think it's every citizen's responsibility to stock emergency food and supplies.  It's not realistic to expect government emergency response teams to provide for your needs within days (or even weeks) of a major large-scale disaster.

Funny funny thread
Wait, so Panda is not coming to Irvine? Why not? John's Creek -- fine we believe you. But Irvine loves u too! When your Cali itch comes around, we be right here waitin

Julstride... who said Panda gave up on Southern California? I just didn't want to live in a small box in Irvine eating ramen noodles for dinner in my mid 30s paying ridiculous HOAs and Mello roos (which i just found out you can't even deduct now.)

Hopefully i will be smart enough to unload all my RE investments in Johns Creek once they double in value and buy me a nice new home to retire in Newport Coast. IHO, Watch out for the crazy FCB panda from the south who will be buying with cash.

IHO.. i know this annoys the crap out of you so i will do it again :)  It is January 9th, 2012 and the weather was nice today in the mid 60s in sunny Johns Creek. hehe.

wow momo, this is a side of you I wasn't expecting... i would be expecting you to grill some USDA Prime steaks in your back yard while running a generator to your hotpot shabu shabu riding out the rioting/zombie attack/occupy Irvine turmoil outside..

When temperatures fall below 35 degrees, Pandas get really depressed and sad and go into hibernation.

That's a fair assessment.

I have a more grand idea of fortifying though. My idea would involve taking over (by force if necessary) one of those gated IAC complexes, and creating my own city-state. I'd separate different areas into barracks, a hospital, etc. The underground parking lots would be utilized for food storage and hydroponics under artificial light. The various swimming pools would be used for water storage, purification, and waste management.

Armed sentries would be posted at each gate, with sniper positions at every corner of the complex. It would be run like a real city.

Much easier to take over a school to create your own city-state.  Many schools have the same features you are looking for PLUS  industrial kitchens and proper meeting areas.

The schools in Irvine don't seem very secure overall though. Take Westpark Elementary. Wide open green fields without any artificial or natural barriers to prevent an incursion. I'd have too much open space to secure, it would become a man power issue for me at that point.

Compare that to Villa Sienna on Jamboree and Michelson; surrounded all around with 8 feet of stucco reinforced walls with only two car entry points, and elevated positions with unrestricted views of the perimeter all around. It would be a sniper's dream.
