My wife and I went to dinner at Opahs in Irvine.

A pair of older (40's) couples sat next to our table and later in the conservation talked about their housing situtation. Apparently they had a 1st/2nd with adjustable, they were underwater and they contemplating walking away from their debt. BUT before they were going to do that, they were going to take their 3 months worth of mortgage as well some saved money and buy an apartment complex and live there.

I almost spat out my food, these people are looking to go FAR more into debt just to support their bad decision. I wanted to talk to them, but somehow, I think they were not going to listen.

Anyways discuss!

"Older"? "40s"? Yikes. In 2 years, I'm going to be "older". I guess when I was 23, people in their 40s seemed practically dead to me, too. <sniff, sob>

SingleMom...

Not to worry, i'm only about a year behind ya.... Older as in mid to late 40's possibly 50's. All the women around them looked like they had some type of work done (my belief about mid to late 40's possibly low 50's). Funny thing though they all had the same Stepford-ish uniform. WAY too tight dark jeans, super tight black blouse and of course a mink jacket or some such fur jacket.

They looked at us like we were aliens. (we were wearing loose but comfortable jeans, sweaters and just regular clothes...) Of course I saw one staring at my wife's engagement ring and just overall jewerly.

Anyways ISM, don't you know about the saying about MiLF's?

What is 61? I've had no work done (except hair dye) and when I'm on the skinnier side, men still look. Please, we're all interesting here. Maybe I have more to contribute because I've experienced more!! In more tolerant societies, this is known as "wisdom", and is ascribed to older people (whether on not they deserve it).

A developer I once knew said another developer he knew said he had 26 years of experience. And added, yeah, but it was the some year over and over again.

When this is not the case, age really does add something.

Liz,

I agree in engineering we have some more seinor gentlemen who have 40-50+ years of experience. When I worked at Los Alamos there were guys still working there from the original project. Their help, work, knowledge is INVALUABLE almost verging on national asset level (as they'd be able to restart any nuclear program... anywhere, anyplace....). Unfortunately we are heading into a transition were we see alot of these guys retiring or just passing away. I think in the near future we're going to have a big push for the sciences again.

good luck

Bis,

In 2000, I saw an article that predicted engineering salary approaching doctor's by 2010. Well so far I have seen a few engineers making $250K and we have few more years to see.

I see a serious challenge for our young engineers to compete due to lack of hand-on's as the technology base has been moving to oversea. It's like solders with no real battle ground to practice on.

I hate to say this but our government would have to make it a priority to make the push for sciences sticks.

NIR,

Yep, i read something like that also. I'm semi lucky that being in the Black Projects sector is good for someting.... But I agree with you also, we'd have to make it a national agenda to get going. Its just a matter of time.

on a happier note, nerds seem to be the new fashion fad!?!?

The test of whether an engineer is "old" or not... Does he/she have a slide rule?

I do (sigh!) and still remember how to use it.

Golllini,

You must be "old". I did see a slide rule in some museum.

Bix,

nerds seem to be the new fashion fad!?!?

Is that so? I personally think "nerds" are HOT!

Ouch! I've got it in a shadowbox frame. "In case of emergency, break glass"

I lost the belt clip for the slide rule someplace. Other than that, it's in fine shape.

I had one in college when I was a physics major. I hated it, the slide rule that is. It got beyond me as far as the math goes too. And being a woman, I was expected to be perfect, which I wasn't.

The hub knows how to use one, still, but his expensive relic was destroyed in hurricane Andrew, as was a wonderful huge metal adding machine with lovely gears, which was a delight to me as a child to pull the long handle and hear the gears go. It not only added, it also subtracted.

Regarding the article, so if they pull out cash, buy the apartment complex in a company, and the home is owned personally, I guess they would be OK unless a lawyer dug into it....wouldn't this be fraudulent conveyance? If they did both deals personally, they could go after the apartment complex and put a lien on it I would think.

I'm also in the late 30s club......reminds me of a conversation yesterday at church, got a nice compliment said I looked early 30s. So as each birthday comes up, I guess I can hold my age for 5+ more years?

Ehh, i was taught to use a slide rule when I was 10ish (dad was a scientist...). Nothing new, its not that hard. The articles i've been reading pretty much promote Nerds because the tend to be "fixer's". They will work themselves to death to make things work out for your and for them (and being trained to notice the small things that make you happy).... Unfortunately... they tend to work themselves to death (and noticing those small things is a matter of opinion ).

As for this couple, yes, it would be fradulent if the mortgage company found out.... The loans also have to be a non-recourse loan. SOooooo, generally speaking its just an overall bad idea.

good luck

Speaking of science and US policy, so far only Hillary has been vocal in bringing back real science to the White House. The last couple of years have been DISASTROUS in that respect - nobody can deny that.

Green cactus, I would not say disastrous, we are just not at the forefront. And they have let the market take care of itself. Unfortuntely if you let the market drive the science they we'd all be driving GIANT sport utilities....(wait...)

As for them being loaded, they should just pony up the money and pay of the loan or at least get to a level they can afford. Instead the discussion was dumping the house and the debt and going after a apartment complex and living in it.
