NEW -> Contingent Buyer Assistance Program
Thanks for this info... I didn't watch the keynote so didn't realize this.  I was thinking of buying some home automation system but definitely will wait for this and see if it's a better way forward.

So if someone gets a hold of your finger, they can access your home, your 2 step verification, and your Netflix account... Booo

I got a couple of ceiling fans that are operated by remote control only, and I needed to somehow get a timer on them.  Went down to Smart Home across from Tustin Legacy and picked up a couple of Insteon FanLincs and a Insteon hub, so now I can schedule when the fan comes on and turns off with my smart phone and tablet.

This is yet another home automation system in my house though(Nest and WeMo on Wi-Fi, couple of LED bulbs on Zigbee, light switches on Lutron Clear Connect 433MHz tech).  Apple and Google getting into this space will hopefully bring some nice integration of things, so I don't have to open up different apps to control everything.

You can already use Zwave for most things.. under one app.

But the experience would be compromised.  Z-Wave thermostat from Radio Thermostat and Honeywell don't have the features offered by Nest or Honeywell 9000.  There's no ceiling fan module like what Insteon makes.  If I want the features I want, I have to go cornucopia on different technologies.  Apple and Google making an API for all the different standards to communicate will hopefully make the experience more integrated...assuming all these vendors buy in to their system.

Doesn't look like those are WiFi connected.

I think if I start doing this, I would prefer that each subsystem at minimum have access via a phone app. I don't mind if they are incompatible and require different apps, just as long as I can access them via one device, my phone.

My iPhone will rule the world.

These will be more for Xmas lights/trees and shutting down unnecessary electronics at night.  The reviews show plenty of uses around the house, the wifi versions are still pretty expensive for 99%ers.

This seems pretty cool. Best looking lock I have seen. Next coolest one is the Kwikset Kevo.

I was thinking about updating my door locks to smart locks. I was going to start with our garage door to the kitchen. If all goes well, I may expand it to our front door as well.

Thinking about going with Kevo since I like the touch feature and my household all use the latest iPhones. It uses bluetooth and has no WiFi access (plus and minus for some), but still can utilize fobs or eKeys with iPhone app. If your lock battery dies or you lose your phone, no biggie--you can still use a traditional key.

I also researched about the August, Lockitron, Goji, and Schlage. Each has their advantages and limitations.

Anyone else use smart locks?

I've been contemplating the Lockitron plus Doorbot setup so I can open the door for friends and family without leaving the couch.  I realized these intercom plus remote unlocking tech has been available forever.  We had one of these systems in our apartment in Taiwan 25 years ago when I was growing up.  Only difference is that the video was black and white back then.

Whenever I see these things, I automatically think "ps9 might want this":

Mother makes almost everything smart using Cookies:

Kinda reminds me of that creepy Robot Butler from the Wink (another Smart Home product) commercials:
