[IHB] Irvine addresses served by Tustin and Santa Ana schools

NEW -> Contingent Buyer Assistance Program
Some Santa Ana schools are very good.  Also, they may cover the material more. For example, in Irvine, the teachers tell the parents on back to school night that they don't have time to teach the kids multiplication so parents must do this.  They will just test the kids in class for progress.  (I think most kids go to kumon, etc and learn there instead of school.)  In SA, kids are taught the multiplication table starting with the 1X and go on only when they have it down.  By end of 3rd grade, they are expected to know it really well.  Writing is also stressed and since many come from parents who work and cannot help them with homework, they get help from the teachers.  Teachers will actually teach the material and make sure the kids get it.

Even in Mission Viejo schools, they learn how to do research in class.  In Irvine, they are given a packet with the information and the parents are expected to teach the child how to do the research project/paper.

Thus far, I am surprised by the big difference between my expectations and the reality of Irvine schools.

I remember learning the multiplication tables in third grade and also grew silkworms!  Forgot what else was required, loved recess.  What are Irvine kids learning in 3rd grade?

in the barrio they were teaching us multiplication in the first grade.

Irvine schools' impeccable reputation is because of parents like KC and SoCal picking up the slacks. If you think putting your kids on a auto pilot then forget it. Your kids will not only fall behind and feel stupid seeing other kids performance the long term lack of self esteem issue is more detrimental.

As both SA and Irvine have similar instructional hours, what is taking up the time in Irvine that SA uses to teach multiplication tables in class?  I went to a gifted magnet in LAUSD and parents were expected to augment the teachers.  That way, class room time could be used for much more than what was taught in the regular classes.  I imagine something similar in Irvine.

Santa Ana needs to get the multiplication table out of the way quickly to make time for emergency exercises and preparation in case of gang shootings. Students are burden with drug and pregnancy prevention classes as well.

This was Costa Mesa, I thought it was multiplication tables, in first grade I was too busy running away from bullies, didn't speak a word of English back then.  Kids tend to pick on the ESL bunch, still true these days or the other way around for not speaking Spanish?

Chinese love to gamble may be they like the challenge of card counting and statistical probability. Another stereotype?

i thought chinese believed in dumb luck... statistics don't play into the chinese psyche... common everyday reactions to good and bad occurrences always involve the word "luck" or "faith".  moneyball would be a great movie for all chinese gamblers to study upon

Multiplication was 3rd grade for me as well. Blows my mind how tough kids are being pushed these days. What about athletics? Play time? Instruments? Time to explore?

Do you know any casino where Chinese is in the minority?

This is different from my experience though.  My son is in an Irvine school, and he is learning mulplications at school right now.  Being an Asian parent myself, I have not sent my kids to Kumon or this sort of schools, nor found him a private tutor (although I did think about it after seeing people on this board mentioning it).  We do teach him some math at home if he asks for it.  99% of his academic learning is from the school, and I am pretty happy about it.

Ah another sterotype.

Chinese love to gamble eh? How about the Vietnamese? Don't they like to gamble too. How do you know if they aren't Vietnamese?

Chinese like to gamble?

Americans like to do what? Spend money and be in debt?

I did not say only Chinese like to gamble. Have you seen those casino buses that make stops at many Chinese market to pick up patrons. Half of all dealers are Chinese in any Casino. During the recession most patrons in Vegas are Chinese.

I always wonder if those casino bound buses can be robbed.. old people plus loads of cash... confined space for containment... sometimes I wonder too much..
