Just wondering if anybody heard of the Hyundai Genesis?

I stopped by to look at one and sure enough it was a nice vehicle. Let me know.

Thanks

The only problem with the Korean products is parts availiblity in years 8-10 of ownership (if you keep a car that long) and the preception that they are shitty quality (which isn't true).

You won't get put up front in the valet at the Commerce Casino but I'm sure it's a hell of a nice car.

I just read a review in Car and Driver yesterday. Great car for the money, but it's still not a serious competitor to the cars it targets. Suspension and ride quality in the twisties stick out as leaving the most to be desired. Car actually bottomed out during testing. Maybe some quality aftermarket struts would help a lot? Interior was good, and the car is bigger than its rivals. Smooth tranny, but frustrating to use manually. Trap times aren't great considering how much HP the V8 has. I think for $32-40k (?) I would rather get a peppy V6 from a more established make. Resale and depreciation on Hyundais has so far been atrocious, as customer perception hasn't yet caught up to them. My father has a '95 Sonata and I will be the first to say they've come a long way in a short time...but they really had to because they were so far behind. All early Hyundais are lemons by definition AFAIC.

My friend in LA just bought one. Nice car and good price. The car has all the the luxury features of a Lexus but a firmer suspension (though not as harsh as a BMW). It is a big car. Interior has more room than 5 series or ES 350 or E class. Quiet car and seems pretty well built. Interior fit and finish is good. His nav has a nice traffic overlay and stereo rocks--loud lexicon system. The Koreans did a great job on this car but unfortunately with the economy is in the tank, it is bad timing. It will be a tough sell for people to spend $$ on a new luxury model from a company that America has historically associated with bargain priced vehicles. But still it seems to be a good product if they can overcome brand conscious OC luxury drivers.

It really depends on what you are looking for. If you are looking for comfort & gadgets, then check out Lexus ES or Acura TL. I still need to check out the new TL, but from what I read, its pretty good. If you prefer more HP and good acceleration, check out the Nissan Maxima/Infinity Gs or M Sedans. The Genesis may be cheaper to purchase up front, but the Acura, Lexus, and even Nissan should be cheaper to own in the long run. You can expect minimal maintenance costs in the next 3-5 years.

Rode around in a friends Genesis the other day. Honestly it looks nice on the outside, but on the inside it just felt like a normal car. Some fake looking wood and one piece of stitching up front. It seems to be a good value, but resale on anything by Hyundai is crap ..

I think it's a great first attempt by the Koreans.

People had a difficult time taking the 1989 Lexus LS400 seriously, though it was a more competitive car in its time than the Genesis is today. Give it some time...

Totally agree. The Genesis won't be putting today's luxury leaders to absolute shame like the LS did but, if I'm not mistaken, the MSRP on the V8 Hyundai is about equal to that of the LS of 19 years ago.

I saw one today on Alton, at first I didn't know what it was as I drove behind Him because although there is a pretty cool emblem on the Trunk comprising of a shield with wings (Kinda reminded me of the Bentley logo) there was no sign of the H for Hyundai...

It's a pretty cool looking Car spoilt only by the cheap looking chrome wheels...

[quote author="effenheimer" date=1224719557]I think the chromes are optional. Never underestimate an American's ability and willingness to exercise poor taste.

They are optional and only in the 18" size. 18" comes in both non-chrome and chromed. I just went with the regular 17" size. They are plenty adequate though. I think alot of people don't recognise that for 1lb of unsprung rotating mass you add, you are effectively adding 7lbs of spring mass.

Shave 5 lbs per wheel is equal to shaving 140 lbs off the entire car. Or in this case adding those giant wheels 20s+ can add as much as 10 lbs per wheel or about 280 lbs total.... wow!

I'd avoid the 18's simply for the tire replacement cost and the reduced ride compliance. Shorter sidewalls only help handling to a point, then there's too much of a good thing.

Honestly it just depends upon the design of the suspension. If it was set up for it, then the suspension would probably not be as compliant with smaller rims and more pliant tires

I don't know, my 17's might be a tad small because the car reads 5mph off. I need a little more testing to figure it out though.

Anybody heard of a release date on the Genesis Coupe?

Genesis Coupe

I was next to one with manufacturer plates on Jamboree this morning (must be a prototype) --- I have to admit, the thing looked damn good. Can't believe I am starting to lust after Hyundai's....

Wow, that is pretty nice for a Hyundai. However, the car costs $33,000? Isn't that the same cost of a BMW 328i sedan?

OT:

This has more to do with tire selection than you might think. The 18" on my Rumion ride better and are quieter than the 16" OE Bridgestones I replaced, but I made sure I bought a ultra premium touring tire and not a performance tire with a much stiffer belt package.

Yes and no. When i looked, I took a look at a base 328, the cost was WAY more than 33k. While they stickered at about 35k, the markup and all the other garbage pushed it will into the 39k OTD. I seriously thought about it for a few seconds, but at that price i could go get a V8 Genesis Sedan (the Coup will be about 5k cheaper (26k) with the 4 cylinder - its the same motor used in a EVO).

The cost difference gets even bigger once you start to look at coup to coup. As mentioned previously its a 26k-35k. The 328 coup starts at 36k. I'm not saying its a DIRECT competitior, its more like a 1/2 behind. BMW is desirable for a reason....

I chose mine because of several reasons, up front costs, running costs, maintence, warrenty, value, size, performance. But yes, its annoying when you tell people you own a Hyundai. They aren't so unhappy once they see the car and ride/drive it around.

Anyways take it easy
