How to find public mortgage record info?

How are you guys finding information on the outstanding mortgages, HELOCs, etc... on homes? I think it's amazing that people are able to find out how many mortgages, HELOCs, and the like have been taken out on a home, but I have not been able to find that information myself on the web.

I believe there is a service some of the mods pay for.



Most of that info can be got for no-cost but it requires an in-person visit to county records as it's not published freely on the web.



"Public" does not necessarily mean "online".
