How safe do you feel in Irvine?

NEW -> Contingent Buyer Assistance Program
I can't seem to find a similar thread about a general sense of safety so here it is. This is mainly to follow-up on Freedom CMs comment on the need for renter?s insurance. Specifically I?m wondering if you ever had anything stolen, lost (and not returned) or have any crime of theft or otherwise ever happened to you in Irvine.

I?m not usually careless or naive, but like I said before I don?t usually lock my car if I?m running to Ralph?s for a couple of items. I never lock my car when getting gas or running into the convenience store. I don?t lock my car running other errands around Irvine; including getting a haircut; Starbucks; lunch or running in and out of doctor?s offices for work. The main reason is that my hands are usually full, my car remote is broken, and I can almost usually park so that I can keep an eye on the car.

Again I don?t usually take unnecessary chances, but I lost count the number of times we left the garage door open; and my wife now impose that I check the front door at night after I?m snug in bed, because I forgot to lock the door a few times.

My wife is not usually absent minded; however she left her purse at three separate Starbucks on thee occasions. Each time she was able to recover the purse after going back. Two times the workers simply kept the purse for her; while the last time a patron made sure we came back to claim it, after more than thirty minutes! Who does that? In any other city, the purse would have been long gone.

We have found lost cell phones and returned it to the rightful owner; I?ve retrieved USB drives, sweaters, jackets and back packs from parks, tennis courts and play ground and either turned it in or found the owners myself.

This is an extraordinary city, and the people in it are honest, and upright. We can speculate that it is due to the social-economic-education status or simply we take pride in taking care of each other here; but I believe people here look out for one another. Sorry I wanted to attach a poll, but I?m way too busy and tired these days with the baby? (some of you are cheering!)

I've never had anything stolen from me, but I never leave anything of value in my car. In my Irvine neighborhood there has been more than one occasion when a bunch of local teenagers were caught going into unlocked cars and taking laptops and cellphones. I've also left my front door unlocked more than a few times, and I'm sure a burglar has quickly walked in and out realizing that there was nothing worth taking.

I disagree with you when you said that any other city the purse would be long gone. A group of friends were eating at busy food court in Los Angeles. We decided to change tables and one left her purse behind. Twenty minutes later a man came up to us and said he was looking all over for her to return the purse. I've left shopping bags at restaurants in LA with outdoor seating and have returned to find it still there on one occasion and on another the waiter took it inside the restaurant for me.

I have parked my car on the streets sometimes, and forgotten to get it into the garage at night. Kiddo has opened the windows and unlocked the car using the remote from the car on two such occassions and I absolutely had no knowledge of it until next morning. I leave my purse, my shoes, my laptop in the car, always.. Nothing ever stolen, yet. Irvine is safe. But then when I lived in Fremont, I had a habit of leaving keys in the door after unlocking. Forgot once and went to India, came back, and it was still there- home completely safe. Either people don't think my valuables are valuable enough, or I have been very lucky..

that is scary! dare I say even more frightening than the foreclosure map...

I feel relatively safe here but I never let my guard down. I never leave my purse in the car and if I have anything of value that is too big to take with me, I conceal it in a compartment. Before I get out, I double-check that everything is with me or well-hidden. When I walk back to my car at night, I have my key out, ready to go and try to stay aware of my surroundings while walking briskly. I do not leave my children alone in the car even to return a shopping cart. If it is night-time, I turn my diamond ring around to my palm so that there is nothing to see. I just spent five years in Chino so maybe I am being too careful but I do think perps come to this nicer area looking for victims. On the flip side: If I find your belongings, you can be sure I will go out of my way to locate you and return it.

Check out that one in Quail Hill... it says two men were caught on tape stealing $4k worth of makeup from CVS. Huh??!

When I lived in another city, criminals liked to go to the Irvine equivalent suburb because residents felt safe there and did dumb things that made it really easy (ex. left laptops in car, put cheques for mail pickup in unlocked mailboxes, etc).

Just do the obvious things (ex. don't leave anything in car, lock car, lock house, get a check fraud pen ($1 at Office Depot) where the ink will bind to the check in case someone intercepts your mail and tries to wash the ink out an rewrite the check to themselves), etc.

What a bunch of clowns ... :)

I changed my mind. I suddenly feel very safe after looking at the crime report and seeing theft defined as stealing two ice cream bars from Northwood Market. Thank God someone called the cops. I'm sure the ice cream drip trail resulted in an arrest.

If you ever have an encounter with the business end of an ice gun, just announce in a stern voice that you are under the protection of bkshopr. Your triad/tong/gang friend will understand and will withdraw.
