How old to walk alone or with friends?

Since we're all in the "send the kids back to school" mode (We're in an year round so we already started end of July) I have this question.  I don't know exactly how old your kids have to be before they're allowed to walk to school alone by the school.  I thought it was around third grade?

How old would your kids have to be before you feel comfortable sending them off to school by themselves or with friends, assuming you live reasonably near the school?

I would definitely not allow my kids to walk alone when they're third graders.  Maybe middle school but then I'll start worrying about other things.  I don't walk my kids to school that much but last time I did I noticed the gardners eyeing the middle school girls so things like that worry me as I have two girls.

It's strange because during the last few summers, my kids have gone to Japan to visit their grandparents.  During that time, we enrolled them in a Japanese preschool/elementary school to get the experience.  Even when they were going to this Japanese elementary school,  after the first day, they had to walk to and from school probably at least a mile by themselves (actually with other schoolmates).  And, Japanese streets tend to be very narrow and hilly in this area, meaning it's very dangerous because it's hard to see the cars.  We let them do that there but we wouldn't dare do that here, even in Irvine.  Also, their Japanese friends would come by and ask to go play and it's normal to let little kids go to the park, nearby stores, etc. by themselves.  So, we let them do that too.

But not here.  Not for a long time.

How do you feel about it?

I actually posted about this too in the Parenting forum:

I feel the same way... I would prefer me kids be teenagers before they walk to/from places... but like you all have said... there are other issues at that age.

The funny thing is I do remember walking by myself (or riding my bike by myself) when I was younger than that age and I grew up in a much less safe area than Irvine... how times change.

IHO - with all due respect, I'm not sure times have changed. I think u have changed. You sound a little paranoid my friend. You live in irvine, not east/south/central LA. With that said I don't have kids but 7-8 years old sounds about right for them to walk or ride a bike to school

Well maybe how public things are now have changed.

I'm sure there were abductions during my youth-time... but it seems that nowadays they garner so much attention (we even have an alert named after it... Amber Alert)... it makes us more paranoid.

Additionally, we didn't have bike helmets, car seats, seat belts etc etc. Kids having kids may have been just as prevalent but nowadays it seems like more kids are doing things they shouldn't be.

There's so much crap on TV that wasn't around when I was a kid... so I don't know how you can say that you're not sure times have changed.

Hello IHO,

Thank you very much for posting the link to your previous thread.  I enjoyed reading it.

We'll check up on all you single guys in a few years and see if you'll let your precious princesses and princes out of your site.  :P

I completely agree that the exposure and sensationalization of things on tv and the Internet has increased and therefore your perception of it may have changed, but everything that happens now happened when I was growing up, that is how I'm sure things have not changed.

Just like the tiger woods thing with him cheating on his wife or athletes using performance enhancing drugs, this stuff has been around forever, there is just more media access, alot more than ever before. Babe Ruth would have been demonized for his off field behavior if he played today.

And if you read my other thread... it's not just about abductions and such... it's also safety.

Drivers are more distracted nowadays and even though my kid may be looking both ways and staying on the sidewalk... it's not going to stop Mr.HaveToTextMyBuddy from jumping the curb and running him over.

And with so many... uh... questionable drivers in Irvine... chances are high here for accidents. :)

While anything is possible, this isn't very probable but I hear ya.
