I've read posts on this board about the benefits of having a home inspection done even for a brand new house.  Since I am watching my house being built, does it make sense to hire an inspector now to check out whats going on before they put up the drywall, and then again before they lay down floors?

I was told yes. But I didn't have the option. because walls went up in a week after we signed
the contract and knew anything about inspection. If you need a inspector referral send me a PM.

We got an inspector.  We didn't get him out before the drywall went up but he went in before our close.  He found a ton of random things that we would have never found on our own during our walkthrough.  The builder tried the old "Well that's how we build off of them" trick, but we pushed them to fix things and they complied.

For 300-500 its worth it for piece of mind.

Were the findings big things or just annoyance things?
If you don't mind, can you give some examples of larger findings?

Here are some examples:

1. Insulation was burned and poised safety hazard in upstairs attic near the furnace
2. Cracked roof tiles
3. Vents were bent and damaged for air con and fireplace

There were others but those are off the top of my head.

I would say they were more than annoyances.  Some were definite safety hazards.

Do you have contact information for your inspector?  I may get him to do my house also.

Wow!!!
you guys did catch a few things. I got the inspector for piece of mind as well. But we didn't find much. many
small things were fixed by the builder in the last days. the inspector came 2 days prior to our walk through and a week
before escrow close.

We used Steve from Bilt-Rite.  I got his info from the boards here.

He came out 4 days before closing (he wanted to make sure the gas line was connected) and found a bunch of stuff.  Then we made the builders do as much as they could before we closed.  They finished the rest afterwards.
