Sanrio to open a temporary Hello Kitty Cafe food shop in Irvine
Nov. 17, 2015 Updated 6:19 p.m.
Sanrio is opening a ?pop-up? Hello Kitty Cafe at the end of the month at the Irvine Spectrum Center, a shop that is certain to cause even more holiday gridlock at the crowded mall.
The cafe, in a retrofitted shipping container, will be set up near the mall?s Giant Wheel. The menu includes macarons, doughnuts, mini cakes, artisanal sodas and premium coffee by Orange County?s Portola Coffee Lab. It?s the first pop-up Hello Kitty Cafe in the U.S.
Other popular Sanrio brands will be represented, including My Melody, Keroppi, and Little Twin Stars. The shipping container modular will be set up like a fast-casual restaurant, with a few high-top tables.
The temporary cafe is expected to remain at the mall for at least a year. Over the last year, the Hello Kitty food truck has parked at the center twice, triggering throngs of shoppers ? including many young girls dressed in pink.
It?s unclear if the pop-up is a trial-run for the Spectrum. Sanrio said it plans to open a brick and mortar Hello Kitty Cafe in Southern California. The company is still actively looking for a location for the permanent space, Sanrio said.
