Happy MLK Day!!

NEW -> Contingent Buyer Assistance Program
I have to work... but one day I'll get my office to make this a "real" holiday.

With the inauguration tomorrow... I am hopeful seeing how much the world has changed in my lifetime. Still a long ways to go... but more than most people dreamed.

Seems weird to say "Happy" MLK Day... My office is open as well. We only do nine company holidays per year and I just don't have enough to give MLK off when I do the annual schedule.

CA Government employees are having way too many paid holidays, plus sick days, plus vacation days. Given the fisical crisis we face in Ca, they should drastically reduce paid days off.

My kids school has C?sar Ch?vez Day as a holiday. Kind of weird.

Well... I'm sure MLK is happy somewhere.

NINE holidays? Ours only does six. But I guess I should be happy I'm employed.

Or maybe the rest of the world has it right and we have far too few holidays, vacation days and sick days.

Yes, just work a few hours longer. Siestas are meant for home. Unfortunately, the majority of us work too far from home for this lovely tradition.

The Governator has recently rolled out a plan to force all state employees to take 2 days unpaid furlough a month. That equals a 10% pay cut for each employee.

Unpaid furlough means they will have those days off right? Not really a 10% pay cut if they don't have to be at work... Now if they said you all will work two days per month for free, that would be a 10% pay cut.

I agree it's not really technically a pay cut, but it is 10% less pay which kind of feels the same even if you are home, your bills don't change. My husband and I are possibly going to be in a similar situation with 5 fewer days in the school year possible for next year. We already do not get a paycheck in July and August and this would affect us pretty significantly.

Five less schools days... My wife would be happy with an extra week of vacation but our wallets wouldn't. That's about what, a 3% decrease or so... My wife would have to work a full summer school term to make that up. Wonder if they will try to cancel summer school for special ed. Can't see that happening, but you never know.

The word as of now is that all summer school, except Special Ed, will be canceled this year, at least in my district. They can't cancel Special Ed, those kids have IEP's and require services, their needs don't stop for a few months during the summer. Good thing for your wife, but summer school for me is probably out of the question. I never thought I'd say that as a math teacher.

tmare: Can you find summer work tutoring? My friend is a high school math teacher and makes great money doing that on the side. Good luck.

We're actually ok. I don't like the idea of losing what amounts to two weeks pay between the two of us and I'd prefer to teach 1/2 of a summer school contract. We have enough savings and I think we've kind of written off the under 5 years with the kids as far as the ability to save anything. We're desperately looking forward to the days of no nanny and no preschool costs. We're losing one of the preschool costs next year as my son starts Kindergarten, whoohoo!!!

We in the same boat T. Kinder starting next year for one, although he will still need daycare for half the day. My youngest is going into full-time preschool so we will be nanny-less for the first time in four years. Will be a strange adjustment but we'll save around $1100 per month cash going from nanny + part-time school for one to full-time preschool and before/after K care for our oldest.

My wife has already earmarked a portion of those savings for a new car unfortunately!

The US has about 5% of the world's population, but we produce about 30% of GDP. I'd say we have it right and everyone else has it wrong.

Good to lose the nanny cost, I'm sure you're happy about that! Unfortunately, we are both teachers so we have to leave the house at 7:00 am, so the nanny will probably stay until the littlest one is in 1st grade. Not quite sure how they are going to GET to school at that time yet but we'll worry about that later. The Kindergarten we have chosen goes until 1:10 with an after school program until 3:00 at a nominal cost so we could pick him up but I'm not sure about the long day for a 5 year old. Our 3 year old will be in preschool until 12:00, so the nanny will become basically a housekeeper and a shuttle service for a few years. I swear we will have paid for more than 1 four year college tuition by the time we're done with the nanny.

Alas, she needs not ten's advice. She already has three crossovers picked out that she likes . I hope the $10K cheaper one wins out!
