New grocer took over Pavilions at Orchard Hills, closed last Thursday and re-opened this past Saturday.  Yelps are negative.  Yelp member Sean D. (second yelp link above) gave a good summary of how Haggen penetrated the CA market.  Got their Tuesday grocery ad last week and prices seem high.  Easy comparison to Albertsons:

New York steak USDA choice is $2 more per lb at Haggen compared to down the street Albertsons.

Supposedly they kept all the old Pavilions workers, if I was working there I would've transferred out.  Wonder if they're still in the Food Workers Union.

I think they bit off more than they can chew with all these store acquisitions.  Big gamble, and time will tell.

went there around 9pm tonight.  it was kinda empty.  the place is nice and clean.

however, things are kinda expensive.  we picked up some cheese for my son and ice cream for my wife...

yaliu, you scoping out OH and getting ready to list your cemetery view home?

thinking about it.  especially with all WTF prices...

however, i can't leave Jmony/aquabliss alone in PP..

They converted our local Vons too.  Prices are a bit all over, generally a touch higher but it's hard to tell with all the leftover Vons/Safeway store brand items still there.

They have a very different target market I've already noticed the bigger shift towards organics in the fresh produce areas.  Haggen store milk is $2.99/gallon about the same.  Meats are the same as prior Vons store pricing, but looking at todays advertisment, seems much less sales.

Really seems like a less hippy-granola Sprouts.

The transition for the stores that converted this past weekend will take the next year.  Bakery has a different philosophy than Vons.  Eventually, everything will be from scratch in the bakery.

Time will tell.

Ours in RSM/MV was converted about a week ago. So far, it's a meh. Not enough of their own brand stuff to see what the deal-e-o is. Yes, prices are higher, notably in their wine department where I think that's how they intend to make up their margins now that they've seen what union wages they have to pay.

Fish selection is much higher quality in our store than before. Milk / eggs / hamburger / chicken seems to be on par with what we had before. The produce has also perked up. Vital like toothpaste, razors, etc are spendier than before. Good thing I'm growing a goatee...

The check out lines have been very long and people are griping. That's pretty much to be expected. In June/July that's when I think they'll get their sea legs and figure out what to do.

Have to say I'm missing the .10/.20 off of gas at Chevron which also weighs in the balance.

My .02c
