"In terms of parenting, marriage, home, clothes ? I will not be a slave to the Tyranny of Trend any longer. I am almost 40 years old and no catalog is the Boss of Me anymore. I am free. I am not bound to spend my precious days on Earth trying to keep up with the Joneses- because the Joneses are really just a bunch of folks in conference rooms changing ?trends? rapidly to create fake monthly emergencies for us. OH NO! NOW IT?S A SUBWAY TILE BACKSPLASH WE NEED!  No, thank you. Life offers plenty of REAL emergencies to handle, thank you very much.

I?m a grown up now. I know what looks good on me, and that doesn?t change every three months. I know how I like my house. I like it cute and cozy and a little funky and I like it to feel lived in and worn and I like the things inside of it to work.  That?s all. And for me - it?s fine that my house?s interior suggests that I might not spend every waking moment thinking about how it looks."

Loved the read - thanks for sharing!

Amazing what a little perspective can do right? We live in this OC blessed "bubble" where a million dollar home is just "average" and there's a lot of keeping up with the Joneses - talk about a world away from the real problems the rest of the world faces.

A humbling read that I'm sure most of us in TI need to bring us back down to the important things in life  :)

I've never understood the concept of keeping up with the Joneses.  Why?  Not like the Joneses is giving me a report card on my progress.

So nice article on reiterating what's the most important things in life.

Don't fool yourselves. This whole forum exists to discuss superficial first world problems. The last time a member tried to post about serious/life changing subjects, he was run out of town.

Lol, so true.

Without the drive to make more money so we can buy more shit, how are humans ever going to get to flying cars?
"keeping up with the joneses" helps humanity progress.
Otherwise, why reach for the stars?

So the chick in the article wants to dance in her kitchen and quote dead poets.  Whatever...
I want flying cars.

+1 on the flying cars.  Just when I thought my M3 is good enough then I saw USCTrojanCPA's Porsche GT3-RS, that's a flying car.

If you're referring to who I think you are... not sure if he was totally true to his posts. I believe when people started pointing out some of the hypocrisy, that's when he ran out of town.

Wish he still posted though.

I too wish Roundcorners was still active, but folks on TI are not comfortable with deep/personal introspective analysis. Most of us are drawn to TI for RE discussion, not how to make our lives joyful. Whether that is good or bad is debatable.

I try to use that "I'm enjoying life" excuse whenever the Mrs. complains about me sitting at my computer reading TI.

Doesn't work.
