So who has a generator?  I'm assuming momopi would be the one to ask on this topic.  Slickdeals discussion mentioned the XP4400 can tie in to your main breaker box so you don't have to run extension cords everywhere?  Gonna need to setup my outdoor shed and make sure this fits, along with gas and water.  Got this shed a few years ago:

It should fit the generator.  Just need to figure out how to survive without wifi...

LTE and cell service should stay up as long as their generators are working.

But in a true Z-pocalypse, I think you need to be more worried about ammo than Interrnet.

Just got the xp4400 for about $300 shipped from a La Verne Ebayer.  Should arrive by Friday, this beast is about 135 lbs, gonna have to drag that into the backyard.  Where's my dolly?  Gotta go pick up some red gascans now.

Ammo/guns will be a separate thread, I think we discussed already, wife still says no.  Maybe I can keep it outside locked up with the generator.  I think that's what momo did if I recall correctly.

I bought a generator on sale from Costco some years back, one with a B&S engine.  i think I paid about double that price, but it puts out a fair bit more power.  I can't decide whether to keep it in the garage, or move it into the crawlspace with our supply of freeze-dried food.  I would really like to recover the space in the garage, but the crawlspace could very well be flattened by whatever event is leading me to seek out emergency food and power.

True that. You need food, water, and "protection".

Did you think of getting a solar powered generator? (If there is a disaster - oil will be hard to come by)

I have a switchover box for mine, but it must be installed by an electrician.  If it is done incorrectly, the generator can feed-back into the utility wires, and electrocute their service personnel when they are fixing the problem that brought the system down.

Whenever I hear "prepper" and "no guns", I know where the first place I'm going to stop and pick up my new generator when fecal matter meets the fans.

Why not just go solar? No need for a separate generator/gasoline at that point, unless it's a nuclear winter. Also, gas goes stale without additional chemical additives.

Just get some guns. When you run out
Of food you just go take your neighbors. They will understand.

Don't worry, never would attempt it myself.  My DIY rule:  if you can die, don't touch it.

I wouldn't buy a generator.

Do you plan to test it every few months?

At this price I would buy a generator, and fire it up once in awhile.  Maybe I should buy a hybrid car and see if that can power the house.

Interesting and novel idea.  It only takes about 20 HP to cruise down the highway in a typical car...yet that amounts to 15kW, enough to power everyone on the cul-de-sac.  With the right hardware I don't see any reason why you couldn't run your house off the batteries for short periods.  However, I'm guessing there's no readily available terminal on the car that can be used to extract that much current.
