General contractor fees? Average?

Anybody have a sense of the fees a general contractor would charge for a renovation project (bath, kitchen, paint, etc.)?  10%?  20%?

Curious to hear about folk's experiences with negotiating this, calculating it (based upon what?  project size?), etc.?

My ex father in law was a GC, he charged a profit rate of 6-10% of a cost plus job. So he would give an estimate and if the job ran over the customer was on the hook. If it was a fixed price gig he would charge a profit rate of 10-20% because if there were over runs he was on the hook, not the customer.

Our contractor also charged 10% for profit, although we were able to negotiate some of the (smaller) dollar values of some of his labor costs (e.g., he agreed to charge slightly less for changing out a light fixture or mirrors).
