State of California requires Carbon Monoxide (CO) Detectors in a home whenever a property is sold. Most lenders are now requiring the installation of CO Detectors on refinance transaction. If you're thinking of refinancing, stop by Home Depot before the appraiser comes out and pick up a plug in wall unit. If it's not there the appraiser will have to go out and re-certify it's there ($150 per revisit....)

Not all lenders have jumped on this bandwagon, but we're seeing more of them every day start asking for this feature to be noted by the appraiser.

Although the CO detector issue is for real, the next thing you know they'll also want detectors for that most dangerous of chemicals - dihydrogen monoxide  ;)

My .02c.

Might as well get the dual CO/smoke alarm ones, more expensive but at least it's hard wired and less clutter on the wall

I keep a supply of CO detectors in the batmobile and have had to do some quick installs at appraisals for this issue.

Regarding Dihydrogen oxide... I bought a can of that stuff in dehydrated form, but didn't know what to add.

All you need now CO Detector Man is a cape and a hidden lair! You've already got the secret identity stuff worked out.

So... what is the rule for these things?

Everything I've read is one should be outside each sleeping space and others say they have to be on each level too.

It has to be within 15 feet outside of each sleeping area.  If the bedroom doors are close together, then you can just use one like I did (if not then you'll need to have two).  Then you want to have one in the living area (not too close to the kitchen and fireplace though).

I picked up a few of the plug-in kind at Costco (isn't there a thread for that place)... it's $28.99 but there is a $7 instant rebate right now.
