Chawanmushi

One of our favorite places to eat, and I personally think, one of the top 5 restaurants in Irvine.  Waits can be frustratingly long at times, as you sit and wait, you face the people eating, so you end up getting hungrier and hungrier...Get there early on weekends.. We usually arrive right when they open at 5pm so we can be guaranteed a table.  If you arrive around 5:15, you'll be waiting awhile, cuz they just sat the whole restaurant (not many restaurants have this capability, good staff) and it's probably a good 35-45 minute wait.

I would recommend not to get the udon/rice combo (too much carbs).  We usually get one bowl of udon (though I prefer the soba since the broth is better) and go with a bunch of appetizer/side dishes.  Nabeyaki is a good one to get if your hungry but be careful as it is volcano hot when it first arrives (watch your little ones).  Tatsuta age (fried chicken), fried squid tentacles, the above egg custard chawanmushi are all good recs.  The braised pork belly is great with the mustard.  If your daring order some natto.  And my fav is the draft beer.. use to be kirin but now its sapporo.. not as good as kirin but still decent.  Arrives in an ice cold glass.. I would buy the chef a glass but he seems to be really focused on his work.  His sous (?) chefs are not of Japanese decent, which is interesting..

Love Fukada.  On our regular restaurant rotation.  Family friendly and price is right.  The secret is out though and the wait can be excruciating.

Kid friendly is right, even down to the same IKEA bowls and forks my kid uses at home.  I think the secret has been out.. and the wait can only get worse.  At least it's not DinTaiFung bad.  I don't like the new parking lot layout.. the new Montessori is to blame... I can expect traffic to be really bad around 5pm during weekdays, with soccer minivan moms and gym overflow parking..yikes.. if that new Taiwanese place does well, it's gonna be a zoo (they should get a lot of overflow from Fukada).

Lol, I remember when that new Taiwanese place used to be Hero's sandwich shop or something.  That place was a ghost town.  Not surprised it didn't make it.  The flow in and out of the parking lot is a change for the worse.  How many Montessoris does Irvine need?!

If you have time, get a sample of chili from the pastrami place next door.  Best. Chili. Ever.  I get some to go sometimes.

Agree, I believe it has chunks of pastrami in it?  It was pretty good.  But two negatives against it:  it's next to Fukada, and its usually closed by the time I have cravings for pastrami.  Wish it was closer on my way to work, then it would be a no brainer.

Apparantly Irvine schools are so crappy private schools are kicking ass.
To be fair... it's usually for preschool where you get the most kids attending private because Irvine doesn't have a public preschool program (although they are working on Transistion (or pre) K). And because K is only half-day in Irvine, some people prefer to have their kids attend private school instead.

You guys don't understand Asians' mentality on education. Sending kids to pre-school, musical or art lessons...etc are very common practice, regardless how good or bad the public school is. When kids get older, private after school tutoring are also very common.

I hardly recall eating dinner at home during my junior and high school years, because the after school studies usually ended after 8 PM.

I've eaten at Fukada a handful of times, and I don't understand it's popularity. The food is very mediocre and overpriced. And the wait is ridiculous. What am I missing here? Are OC people that desperate for average Japanese food?

I find Fukada very reliable.  Is it Japanese gourmet?  Well no, but it's a great place for families and it won't break the bank.  The wait can be excruciating tho.
