So what's your favorite sandy spot?  My pick is salt creek in Dana point,  nice and small, easy parking, only negative is the uphill walk afterwards.

When I was younger, the Wedge... something spicy about going up against the waves with just yourself (I was an old school body surfer, no board, no fins... just me and the wave).

I still like Newport, any of the teen streets. Then there is Laguna Beach for the kiddies... crowded but small waves.

I like Crescent Bay in Laguna (parking is the only issue)--smaller beach but beautiful and feels secluded. No snack bar but has a bathroom/shower. http://www.yelp.com/biz/crescent-bay-point-park-laguna-beach

If you have kids and carry a lot of junk, then Aliso Beach in Laguna may be a better choice. The parking lot is next to the sand and the parking rates are much cheaper than going to Corona Del Mar. Sand is kept pretty clean, lots of single stall bathrooms for changing, and has a decent snack bar.http://www.yelp.com/biz/aliso-beach-laguna-beach

Crescent Bay, Diamond Street, or for those with strong legs, 1000 Steps (9th Street, by the Hospital).

Crescent's a great family beach.
Diamond Street's got great rocks to explore, plus the blow hole which you have to try.
1000 Steps is isolated and uncrowded. Old School.

Avoid Aliso Creek as the Trabuco / Aliso river flows out there making the waters a bit unhealthy to swim through.
