Got mail? Go get it.

New home buyers, say, "Adios" to doorstep delivery now and forever.  Your home is no longer eligible. You won't have your own mailbox but rather a cluster box, if you don't already have curb-line. Although with the density in some newer areas, that can't be too far of a hike.  ;)

We've all seen the cluster boxes in new communities. I just didn't know it was permanent / widespread until I saw the article. I have curb-line with door step delivery of packages. I am hoping they do not convert.

Do you have your own mail box?  I've seen some FHR streets that have the cluster of boxes.  Walking to get the mail could be pretty convenient.  Think about the extra 10 calories taking those extra steps. :)  This also gives you an opportunity to be outside to say hi to your neighbors. (If people still do that.  ;) )

I have my own mailbox. I do not have my own post. There are 4 different mailboxes per post. It is in front of my home. I think only rural areas and older homes have their own box on their own post.

A "cluster of boxes" is any group of individual mailboxes (think: the kind with the red flag) and can be curb-side. A "cluster box", the kind the USPS requires in new developments, is one giant box in a central location with separate compartments - generally servicing somewhere between every 10-15 homes or possibly more.

They hope to save lots of $$$ by "spending less time" delivering the mail.

Ours is on one post with two mailboxes.  The neighbor on the other side have their own post probably because they are at the end.

When we lived in WA state, we lived in a upscale area with over 10K sq. ft. lots and we had the cluster box.  I think there were compartments for four to six families each with separate locks for each family.  There was a secure slot on the top for outgoing mail.  For small to medium sized packages, there was two compartments that were also keyed.  The mailman would put in the key for one of the package compartments into your locked mailbox.  Then, you used the key from the mailman and opened that other box and got your package.  Once you opened that box compartment, the key would not come out until the postman came to recover the key with his/her special key.  It was much more secure than here where the mailboxes are wide open, which I do not like.  Thank god for direct payments so that I rarely have to put in a check in the mailbox to send anymore.  So the cluster box setup isn't all bad.

Having no residential mail service but only a P.O. Box in a post office is also safer than a cluster box. Taking yourself to the post office could burn more than 10 calories walking to your mailbox. It is also more social as you could see many more people. So, therefore, would you guys prefer they cut back entirely on residential service and you just go to the post office to pick it up? I have a feeling that's next. They already don't want to do Saturday delivery because of their financial situation. I like having mail & packages brought directly to me.

I am way too lazy to go to the Post Office.  :P  Maybe I was supposed to read between the lines here but I wouldn't want to be caught in some of those lonesome P.O. Box areas, especially later at night.

I believe this has been the case in Irvine for some time. Developments from 1999 on already started doing the cluster box.

It reduces mail delivery time but more often than not, I'll get my neighbors mail in my "cubie".
