I glanced at the ads in an email I received, and I saw a Google ad for Donald Bren. (I didn't know he advertised...)

When I clicked the link, it took me to Donald-Bren.com. I had never seen this before, so I thought I would share it here.

I think it is an unspoken truth on this blog that whenever we refer to The Irvine Company and what they do, we are talking about Donald Bren. So if anyone wants to learn more about the man, click on the link.

As much as we complain about the Irvine Company, they have created this community we all love so much, and the vision came from this man.

That's cool and all, and thanks to him and his late wife I have pretty matching degrees, but why does he need to advertise?

He is a genuinely a passionate philanthropist. His lifestyle is private and understated compared to others with his wealth. The press or media certainly have not painted an accurate picture of him. At the very least I am writing this unsolicited and backing his character with my reputation. Parallel to Irvine Renter?s comment Irvine would not be in today?s shape without Bren.

His approach is stewardship for the land. For thousands of acres set aside as nature preserve while the lands dedicated for developments must be studied carefully and tirelessly so not a square inch of land would be ignored and wasted. His business model is always to maximize the financial potential. For every vein of his business tenacity there are vessels of philanthropy.

I disagreed with some developments executed by his staff or consulting planners and architects not executing his vision to his specification. There are more hits than misses over the years. His team needs to implement and delegate but few really actually spent enough time with him to understand his thought process. Interacting with him for several minutes would be a luxury therefore most tried to paraphrase his comments and that could become convoluted for those who are actually performing the work down at the bottom of the corporate totem pole.

Shady Canyon and the Irvine Spectrum Retail represent his hallmark developments. Architects and planners must first need to understand Bren?s vision, familiar with the design vocabularies and architectural details, take in the account of today?s construction limitations, understand the financial and economic model as it relate to land cost and building cost, savvy with consumer demographic and educated and in tuned with all their cultural diversities, ultimately command the skill of branding and marketing that appeal to the psyche of consumers.

I appreciate the vast nature preserves that has been set aside, but wish it could have been planned better with more land allocated to connecting various scattered pieces of wilderness parks, instead of tiny wildlife corridors.
