Anybody recommend a deli slicer for home use?  Amazon prices range from $50 to $500.  Looking to shave turkey/ham/Shabu shabu beef

Craigslist ad:

Barely used deli slicer, need something to cut through bone, this one did not so I'm selling it.

Creepy.....

What momopi said is so true. As an alternative, I would suggest just going with an electric carving knife. It may not give you as close of a cut as you want if you're dead-set on shaved meat but they do a darn good job and you'll also get so much more mileage out of it. Plus they are compact and easy to store. For example, I bake my own buns, bread, slider rolls, etc. I find the carving knife does a much better job slicing those even when hot out of the oven than do (non-electric) bread cutters. I also use it on turkey, ham, standing rib roast, so on and so forth.

For Shabu Shabu, it needs to be super thin, so basically a couple swishes in the pot and it's cooked.  Texture should almost crumble/melt in mouth.

That guy Mr. Chop-Chop at the OC Marketplace & Fairgrounds back in the day.

I can still remember the smell walking past that booth.

Partially freeze the meat, it's easier to cut thin.

Check the slicer, the commercial grade ones tend to be more $200+ versus the $80 or less for non. The commercial grades tend to have the slicing tray tilted at a
Much steeper angle, this is important for keeping the meat on guide and feeding the blade.

The cheaper ones are flatter and have a more  pronounced gap between the slider arm and the guide which tends to pull the meat into it and create a little tail hanging on your meat slices

The last big thing to check is meat size. How large of a piece can the machine handle.  You have to get a full stroke and be able to flip it over.

Would this be considered a unitasker?

Cleaning it alone would deter me from actually owning one.  I guess if you have 8 kids to pack lunch for and you shabu regularly, may be a worthwhile investment.

Wow, that's going way back, I do remember the smell of mirepoix as I go past his booth on the way to get my 5 California tshirts for $10 and my new NES game.  Funny, might've met lil IHO and Aqua back then :)
