My 1-yr promotional rate with Cox Cable just expired and my monthly bill just increased by $60.  Before I make the call to their customer service requesting (demanding) a rate decrease or I'll cancel my service, I wanted to see if any TIers know of a proven tactic to lower my rate.

FYI - I'm not interested in cancelling my service w/ Cox for an extended period of time, nor am I interested in switching to DirectTV/Dish or anything like that.  But they don't need to know that.  Thanks.

Connect to loyalty retention department (or something like that).

Based on my experience, my rate went up by $30-$40 due to some expiring bundle rates early this year .. I called them right away and connected to their loyalty retention dept.  The rep started to ask me question on what i watch etc etc.. I was not in the mood to chat so i just insist keep everything the same and give me the best rate (we have had Cox for the last 10 years or so).  After a long pause and bunch of keyboard click, she told me I already have the best bundle they have and nothing she can do.  I threatened to move to uverse (and I have a rate quote for uverse at hand showing they are cheaper for the same services), she said sorry she can't do anything.  I ask to speak to supervisor, she said she is it and I have the best rates.

About a month later, I called again and connected to the loyalty retention department again.  THis time, I was not really busy so I played along with the rep question on what channel I watch etc etc and she made a bunch of suggestion to save money by removing this/that.  I just played along and chat .. In the end, after maybe 15 min or so, she was able to find a bundled pricing for 12 month no contract and total was actually slightly lower than my old rates before the increase while keeping everything else exactly the same.  Now if that is just coincidence that they have a new bundle rates that did not exist before or if I just got lucky with the representative that she is more diligent in looking for deals -- I dont really know.

I had a 2 year contract that was expiring in a couple of days. I called them and the Service Rep told me that the plan I was on is no longer available. However He had an equivalent plan that I agreed to. He then transferred me to another department to process the information.  The next Representative told me the plan was not available anymore. He then offered me another for $40 more. I was so irritated that I basically hung up on him.
My next bill went up over $150. I noticed I now had unlimited Mexico dialing and other premium services added. I am don't have relatives in Mexico.
Therefore I called back again, very irritated. After explaining what happened on the phone to the Lady that answered.  She went back in the record and she said "the last Rep I spoke to added all these additional charges to my account".  She seemed as irritated as I was at this point.  She forwarded me to some Manager.  He gave me the equivalent package and also credited my account for the overcharges from the previous bill.
If there was a better alternative,I would switch.

Is it possible to cancel my current subscription and sign-up under the promotional rate again in a month?  My first attempt at speaking with the Retention team only decreased my rate by $20/month (and still $40 higher than I was paying before), and that's with significantly less services.

I wonder if I have to start considering cancelling cable TV altogether.

No, Cox requires you to be a non-subscriber for (I think) 2 years before you're eligible for the promotional rate again.

Thanks,
Roger

Robert?

Ya I'm tired of using Ronnie.  Maybe Roger or Ronald is better?  Sticking with "Ro" though - it's good luck.
