I was chatting with a realtor about possible communities to look at since my wife and I have just started to look, we need a bigger place and want to move out of Irvine, it is too flat and cookie cutter for us. We were thinking Coto maybe, until the realtor told me part of Coto was built on landfill? does anyone have any info on this?

We moved out of Irvine and moved to Coto for the very reason you listed. I have never heard that Coto was built on landfill. We love the area and we are glad we moved. It's really a beautiful area.

The following is from an environmental data report evaluating potential impacts from Hazardous Materials:

"One site, Coto De Caza Disposal Site, could not be located based on the address information provided.

This site is identified as being located in the unincorporated community of Coto De Caza, but

its exact location is unknown."

So apparently there was a site somewhere.

The report I saw was unable to come to any conclusions at all due to limited information about the exact location though.

I also saw the same study online, I am unsure where to look for the info..... It is probably an old landfill site so the info is no longer available? I heard there are talks of cancer etc from living in Coto due to landfill..... this is really bad since I considered Coto my #1 choice in OC, it seems like a wonderful community. I hope it is not true, if anyone knows anything about this, please share. thanks!

Yeah, it's all one huge toxic landfill. And Africanized bees and fire ants and outrageously hot in the summer. Better to look elsewhere.

I've posted a bunch of links somewhere regarding landfill information. Try the search function.

For a list of past and present california landfills go to <a href="http://maps.google.com/maps?q=http://bbs.keyhole.com/ubb/download.php?Number=76260&t=k&om=1">this site </a>. I don't see anything near Coto.

Maybe the realtor meant it more as "fill". Often the builders will smooth over hills and bring in dirt to make more buildable lots.

If I were you, I think I would ask the realtor how they knew that.

Maybe the realtor wants to focus on Irvine and not leave the city. I know some realtors don't like to leave their comfort zone.

Mark, I sent you a private message (pm).

Awgee, there's been a lot of wildlife activity at night (in case you haven't heard). It sounds as if some coyotes had their puppies. They are very loud at night. If you have any pets, I would keep a close eye on them. I've also seen a deer and her fawn walking on Trabuco last week. Very cute.

No, I haven't heard them. Tex was attacked by either a coyote or a mountain lion last year, but he was fine. He had two puncture wounds in one side of his neck and one in the other side, and he has about a 7-8 inch diameter neck, so it was something with a large bite.

For followers of Dove Canyon - 20 Promontory went back to the bank today for $697k. NTS amount was $835k. Last sold in 1998 for $465k, free $ abuse looks like it led to foreclosure.
