Columbus Square: Why doesn't it feed Beckman High?

NEW -> Contingent Buyer Assistance Program
Hi everyone,

I've often wondered when I was touring Columbus Square...Why doesn't any of the houses here feed into Beckman High?

Presumably, it is in 92782, and for that amount of money that some of the models are going for + high Mello Roos, you would expect that your kids can go to brand new elementary, middle and high school instead of Tustin High.

Nothing against Tustin High, but it doesn't look as nice as Beckman High, and I'd feel ripped off for paying so much Mello Roos.

Anybody knows hat gives?

My understanding is that the Tustin school district plans on closing Tustin High and building a new high school somewhere on the former Marine Corps Air Station property. I don't know if there are any public/formal plans or a solid timeline for this though.

i heard from a lyon rep that it will be awhile before the high school pops up. but the elementary school has been approve and will come in a few years.

Yup. Tustin is planning to build all new schools at Columbus Square. So if you have toddlers now, by the time they grow up, they can walk to all the new schools.

Thanks for the information.

Not sure if it's that re-assuring to get promises for new middle and high schools sometime in the future.

If they are closing down Tustin High and all the students there go to the new high school, well that's great for the current Tustin people who gets a new high school...so why is there such a premium to live in Columbus Square versus the older homes in Tustin across Edinger. Doesn't seem like much difference except the homes are newer and your HOA and Mello Roos are higher.

I have heard this as well from someone who's lived in Tustin a very long time and knows what they're talking about...I haven't heard anything extra, unfortunately.

I know someone in the TUSD and according to them there isn't enough money to build the new high school so they are possibly looking to just expand the current Tustin High location.

My kids went to Foothill and then transferred to Beckman when it opened. To them, Tustin High is ghetto. Tustin High pulls students from the poorer part of 92780 and its test score is much worse. Foothill gets some of that but it also gets the richer demographic from the Tustin Hills. Beckman gets most of its students from 92782 and 92602 (West Irvine).

The new high school (whenever it's built) should have in general the same demographic as Tustin high but with VOC blended in.

Very interesting dynamic when Beckman first opened. The rich kids in 92782 and the poor kids elsewhere (Beckman had to take some students from Santa Ana) weren't getting along and there were a lot of fights. Now it's pretty normal. Beckman is pretty amazing in term of its facility. It's better equipped than the Fortune 50 Company that I work for with computer/flatscreen, audio/video/camera everywhere.

Bottom line Revovery_H, if school is an issue for you, buy in 92782 North of the 5. I used to live next to Peters Canyon Elementary and I feel that it's the best area of Tustin Ranch with the schools within walking distance and the parks/trails. The homes are fairly new and Mello Roos is low there too. Good luck!
