Cold cuts

Been getting my deli meats from the supermarket deli recently as opposed to the prepackaged Oscar Meyer/hickory farms meats.  Not sure if its the recent Ickey commercial but it is night and day when making a sandwich.  Must be the thinner cuts you can achieve with the deli machine.  Currently my favorite is the deli counter turkey at Von's for $8/lb.  Albertsons carry dietz&watson, and their turkey is very good as well, though a tad expensive at $10/lb.  The tricky part is to finish it all in a couple days since they don't last as long as the prepackaged stuff.  So good sometimes I eat it sans bread.

Gonna get some cold cuts!

Applegate has prepackaged.  Pretty good and lasts longer. I use to get deli too but couldn't eat it fast enough and was qwertywasting it.

Applegate is good because it is non-nitrated.  Nitrates are bad for you.  Most deli meats contain nitrates.

They sell deli-thin cuts in the prepackaged section... that's what we use but my taste buds are not as refined as yours.

Which brand?  Majority are sliced too thick and if too thin they tend to dry out.  That's why I went with deli:  thin and juicy.

PS9 likes his meat, thin and juicy :-)

Applegate advertises to be better for you but not sure if it really is. I feed the kiddo their chicken tenders too.

Get ready for it tasting more like Spam (R) as Hormel is about to close on buying Applegate.

Oh well, all good things must come to an end.

I like Columbus cold cuts in general, they are sold at Costco and Ansar Gallery.

Yikes.  My two faves are prosciutto and salami.  I guess less of that and more boring turkey breast.

Prosciutto goes a long way with less of it on the bread - probably overall a net benefit over putting half a pound of turkey on a sandwich. Salami on the other hand has who-knows-what in it that makes it the food of gods (look for Hungarian salami at Bristol Farms) but is horrible on the body.

Anyone recommend a good roast beef?  I know mr sandwich uses Boarshead for roast beef and that's the best I've had.  I've tried all the prepackaged ones and none of them taste like beef, weird.

Like you, I have recently switched from prepackaged lunch meat to deli meat. Unfortunately, I have never had a positive experience with roast beef from the deli. The reason being that it is too rare. I don't like my meat bloody. I can't seem to find one that isn't so for that I do get it prepackaged just because it is cooked more thoroughly. Let me know if you find a good one. Something that doesn't still go "Mooooo".

Thumann's Italian Style Roast Beef. YUM!

FYI, Albertsons has Jenni-O turkey cold cuts for $4/lb.  Got some oven roasted turkey, good for lunch for the next couple days and at this price it is cheaper than buying prepackaged.  The $4 price is good for the cheapo ham as well, didn't try it though.  Make sure you tell the service clerk to slice it extra thin.  Got a lazy one last time at Pavilions and sliced it like 1/8".  It was disgusting.
