They hope by relaxing visas, they can encourage foreign women to go to China and help solve the gender imbalance. Since they're considered "undateable by Western women" (per the article), most of them will have to come from South Asia, esp. Vietnam as mail-order brides.

YellowFever, any thoughts? The guy in your profile pic still needs a woman. The article suggests the poor rural men share a wife, 2:1.

Solution to both countries' problems is to have a big war with each other and cannon fodder off their excess men.

War does work for culling men. So many young German men died on the Eastern Front in WWII that post war Germany became a nation of women, many of whom were brought back to the US as war brides. Even today, the population of German has not recovered from the pre-Barbarossa times.

Well, as the saying goes: "Two can play that game." I told my husband that when he dies, I'll have to find an asian guy. It's one of the reasons to stick around T.I. Survival requires strategic thinking. It's hard out there on the streets for a single lady from O.C. I plan to rely on all my contacts here to locate the handful of asian guys in America who like white women. USCTrojan will skillfully write up an ad about me just like he does for all of his listings. SoClosetoIrvine will expertly translate that into Chinese and post it on Weibo. A committee, headed up by YellowFever, will sort through the responses and weed out the "2-for-1" countrymen. I will need Qwerty & Iho to be bouncers in charge of pre-screening them in person. Then, if all goes well, we will meet up at a hot pot place for dinner where I will pretend that I totally know what I'm doing. 
 
For many, it's the size of the wallet. 

I saw an article about how it's very difficult for men living in poverty over there to get a wife.  Then I thought about this thread.  How many women want to go to China to find a broke ass husband living in poverty?  ;D
 
China's gender imbalance problem actually follows S Korea's pattern.  Parents are reluctant to abort their first child regardless of gender, so the first child's gender ratio is fairly normal.  But if they have 2nd or 3rd child the ratio of males go up significantly.  In China where they strictly enforced one child rule the gender balance was fairly normal, but when they relaxed it the 2nd child is more likely to be male by sex selection.

For decades Chinese farmers along the Sino-Vietnam border had imported poor-er Vietnamese brides illegally, long before Taiwanese men came for Vietnamese brides.  In the 1990's China was heaven for Taiwanese and HK men and, by 2000's schools in Guangzhou had classes teaching girls how not to become a mistress for wealthy Taiwanese or HK men.  Today the trend is slowly reversing where well to do Mainlanders are marrying Taiwanese women.  Two of my wife's Taiwanese classmates from UCLA went to work in China and married well to do local men.  Some well to do Mainlanders are also marrying Russian and Ukrainian women.

However, we are talking about economically well off men and not the poor guys in rural areas.  Their local women left for jobs in the city and many would never return.  For them Deng's economic reform is turning into soft eugenics where the men left behind are basically screwed.

The stereotype picky Chinese/Taiwanese/Japanese/etc women want 3H (Height, Handsome, High income).  The order goes like Height as short handsome men will never be tall, Handsome as ugly high income guy will never be good looking, etc.  In a recent survey of college women in Japan, 75% of the women indicated that they would rather date a tall plain looking guy over a short handsome man:

There has also been numerous studies in the US about heightism.  With modern surgical methods it's now possible to become taller, better looking (symmetrical face), or even bigger between the legs (penuma implant) if you're willing to spend the cash and take the risk:

If we look at the prevalence of cosmetic surgery in South Korea, I can imagine others following the trend.

Just imagine the surprise if she marries a tall, handsome man who had secret surgery... when she gives birth to his short, unattractive children.  ;)

Ooooooh my God. I just watched that 20/20 video! The end of that first segment where the guy twists his leg & expands the internal bone rod with a snap --- GAH!!!  :o

It's so interesting how the man says his dating life improved drastically by going from 5'6" to 6'1". As a mommy of boys, this is a relief. It makes me grateful that I make tall babies. My baby is already 6'1" and has several more years left of growing. Hopefully, their lives might be a little easier & happier. Really sad to hear in that video that some short guys commit suicide. So unnecessary. Short people have value, too.
 
here's a fun fact. In china, they won't show you the sex of the baby during pregnancy. It is against the law to do so.

The only way to find out is to give them a fat bribe or go out of the country.

A chinese guy I know (family member) was dating a chinese girl.  He found out she had a lot of plastic surgery.  When he saw her original pictures, he had to break up with her.  He said it was so bad that he was afraid she would give him unattractive children.
 
OmG. I just choked on my snack reading that and laughing. The man at the table next to me is looking at me right now like I'm a nut job (because I'm sitting all alone. Nobody is here telling me anything.)

It goes both ways. What do females say about him? 

It's not all about dunking in BBall. Don't try to dunk, if you can't jump. A person is still valuable if he can shoot 3s, pass, rebound, block.
