Pretend City, the children's museum new to Irvine, has hung a "swastika"-type symbol inside their Home exhibit which is used to educate young ones on diversity. The museum selects a variety of local families to represent and rotates their presence in the exhibit accordingly. At the present time, they are displaying artifacts from a Hindu family. The symbol, which originates from this religion, was adopted by the Nazi party during WWII. Some have taken to the museum's Facebook page to express their displeasure, while others support the museum's choice to display the symbol. The facility's vice president, Linda Hunter, has personally responded to the issue. You may view the dialogue here: Pretend City on Facebook

How do you feel about this display? As a parent, would this make you any more or less likely to take your child to this exhibit? Discuss.

Well, O.C. Register finally picked up the story. At first, the museum stood by its decision to leave up the symbol and include an educational notice with it. After further discussion and boycott threats, they took it down (which is angering a new group of people. Darned if you do, darned if you don't.) Notice how the Hindu symbol is not identical to the swastika... it is left-facing.

Hindu Swastika Causes Storm in Irvine

That is just sad.  Some ignorant people complain and they took it down, probably because they are afraid of lawsuits.

Sometimes, you have to stand up and state the facts.  Tell the ignorants that if they don't know, then LEARN!!

Maybe they should have put up a big sign that said "THIS IS NOT A SWASTIKA!".

According to the article, there was a sign accompanying the tapestry:

The tapestry, which belongs to the Bhasin family of Irvine, first went up on July 27. It was accompanied by a sign explaining swastikas through history and what makes the Hindu swastika unique.

So are all these people boycotting Hanes underwear? Check out the mustache their famous spokesperson is sporting:

From what I've read, it's a tribute to his dad... but still.

Left-facing Sauwastika is used in Buddhist & some Hindu Temples.  In Asia it's also used on maps indicating a temple.
