So, I'm moving to Irvine in a couple weeks, and I'll need a cheap good barber in the area (Irvine or adjacent cities). Nothing fancy, just a fade every 2 weeks, under $15 ideal (and of course, the lower the better). Any suggestions?

They charge an extra buck for #0, so $8 for me and usually tip around $4, the guy I get my cut from takes his time, and it shows.  I sit across from one of the twins (which I didn't like) and he cuts it fast.  3 guys go thru his chair before my guy is done with me.

Well my old barber was fast and good.. but the one time I had the twin cut my hair.. it was fast and sloppy.. asked for #0 and high fade.. came out more like #1 and low/medium fade.. I like my fade to be straight up.. more like "U" shape.. the twin cut it more like "Y" shaped.. which gave my thick hair a fro look.. dunno, maybe it gets better as he cuts your hair more.. i do admit he gets more traffic then anyone else, but then it is probably due to his speed more then anything.

Man I can go for some Mongolian bbq right now..

Resuscitating an old thread.

How much do you guys tip on such a cheap cut?? At places with higher prices, I tip 20% if I'm satisfied, but that would be ridiculously low at this rate and at this price, the tips I normally leave would be more than the cut.  :) PS9...??

In about 3 weeks, I'll be hitting up either Bell Tower or Twin Peaks a stone's throw away. Probably Bell Tower, though. I want to be prepared.

My search for a good barber continues.  :'( I got a great recommendation by my bag boy for a guy at Twin Peaks II in RSM but apparently everybody else in OC loves this barber, too, because the line was out the door. Long, long wait, then I have to sit through 2 cuts!

I tip $5 on my $15 haircut, but I've known my girl for years and she's always been fair.  Plus, I know her background and she's had a tough go of it, so I don't mind giving a little extra.  I also give her $20 as a Christmas "bonus" every year.  I'm probably the exception and not the rule.

I tip my bell tower guy $5... we're almost at the point of just nodding and hello... No need to ask what kind of cut... :)

i tip $5 at both supercuts ($16) and Sportsclips ($19).  The sports clips at the district has a really hot Vietnamese girl who looks like J-Lo from the back.

All of sudden I have an urge to get a haircut today at Sports Clips at the District even though I just had one...

And Mark Anthony in the front?

actually J-Lo from the neck down.

there is a cute hispanic chick with long curly hair, as well at the district. ive been meaning to try other sports clips to see how the talent is elsewhere, although in my experiences, if you want talent you probably need to go to an actual salon and pay 40-50 a haircut? i dont even know what they would charge these days.

Thanks for all the replies! Good to know. I like to round up. $7/kid x 2 kids = $14. $5 tip each = $10. $14 + $10 = $24... eh, I'll throw him $25, maybe more if my little one is a squirmin' vermin which he sometimes is. Not bad for two.

I would not tip $5 on a $7 cut.  $5 total on two kids seems appropriate.

I was kind of baffled because when I went to an $8 barber the other week, I saw guys giving the barber a twenty and not asking for change. The MOST they could have spent would have been $14 so that would be a $6 tip. Plus, that place does charge $2 for calling in to add your name to the waiting list. I actually did as you say and only tipped $5 combined but felt like total pond scum for doing that even though the cut was just "ok" / so-so. I'm normally a good tipper - if I'm pleased, I will tip 30%, but even on this low-dollar cut, that seemed too low. After seeing 2 guys both hand over a twenty & get no change, I felt terrible. Told myself I will verify w/ other guys next time before I go to one of these. They should raise their prices because these low prices cut into their tips when people get confused like me. :-\

Edit: I don't think they were paying the $2 charge because I overheard the barber saying he was waving that fee he normally charges. It seems like they really did tip anywhere from $12 to $6 depending on if they got a cut from $8-$14.

@ Bell Tower

Is there usually a long wait for one of the twins?

Do they charge to add your name by phone?
