We are upgrading our home and are wondering if we should install a ceiling fan in the living room (we are installing ceiling fan in all the bedrooms).  In Asia, it is very common to have ceilling fans in the living room, however, we are not sure if it is common practice in US - we do not see ceiling fans in the living room in the model homes that we visited.  Is it a common practice to have ceilling fan in the living room?

By living room do you mean family (TV) room?  We had a fan in our previous home.  Besides the kitchen, the family room is where we spent most of our time.  It definitely helped in the summer months.  And no it's not weird.

Yep... I'm with ps9, ceiling fan in the family room (or great room) is fine and helps during the hot days (which we seem to have more of now).

Agree with above.  Plus I wouldn't necessarily use the model homes as the guide.  They don't necessarily design with practicality in mind.

May I suggest, if you are going to install one, please be thoughtful of your potential visitors by installing at a generous height, including any hanging toggles used to control the fan. Or, if you need it to be low for reach-ability, put it over a table or something to prevent traffic passing under it. For my own home, I would only consider it in a room with vaulted ceilings, which you probably don't have. A little old lady once invited me over to her house to see her home addition in which she installed a new ceiling fan... I turned the corner and almost got scalped. Very, very scary. #tallpeopleproblems
