How funny! We just got some of these templates yesterday and are now looking for an appropriately sized pumpkin. Can't decide if we will do the full face or just the logo....

It's not political but it's cute. I'm having a tough time deciding what character to do next.

I'm a huge Simpson's fan, so either Satanic Flanders, Kang or Mr. Burns as Vlad. But Jason or Hannibal might do a better job of scaring the neighbors.

Good job! I don't know how you get all those fine cuts. I have a lot of trouble making detailed cuts on a pumpkin. It is just so hard to control.

Very cute! Last night, I carved the first of our two pumpkins, ironically, it is named Hannibal the Cannible. It is a large pumpkin chowing down on a smaller pumpkin. When we get the political pumpkin done, I will submit some photos.

Thanks Socal! This was my 2nd attempt. The first pumpkin was not a good size and my prep was wrong. Visit www.pumpkinlady.com, she's got very informative videos. I'm trying to create a Wow Wow Wubbzy template... Yes, I'm very addicted to this pumpkin carving stuff.

Btw, at the Albertson's on Culver/Irvine Blvd., they sell a motorized carving knife for $3 or so. It has a very fine saw. This helped me with the eyes and the mouth portion.

Becareful not to cut yourself and have fun.

Hehe - I tried that motorized knife last year. Would you believe I snapped the blade? I've also broken every knife out of every carving kit I've bought so far. I must be doing something wrong. Now I just use like a steak knife but it isn't very versatile. Also, how the heck do you gauge the thickness so well so as not to cut all the way through? (It looks like some of Mickey such as the nose is transparent, right?) You should start yourself a little pumpkin carving business! I bet people would buy them.

Haha, thanks Socal but I'll keep my day job. =) If you visit the pumpkin lady site, she says not to turn the saw or blade because pumpkins don't flex. Just move it back and forth.

I noticed that if you get one of those pumpkin kits with the scooper, it makes the wall a bit thinner to carve.

I wouldn't use a steak knife just because it's a bit more dangerous than the pumpkin saws.

1. pick a pumpkin

2. pick a design template, print

3. tear the edges of the template so the template conforms to the pumpkin

4. tape on template

5. use a push pin to "dot" up the design on the pumpkin

6. let the saw or motorized saw do the work

7. patience

Thank you Southie. Are you doing the faces or lettering or doing something completely freehand? Whatever it is, I look forward to it, even if it is McCain's portrait. =)

We are going to try to carve Sarah's face from a template. If we can pull it off, it will be really neat! If we mess up, we may resort to the simpler logo. Thinking of buying a special blade for our roto zip tool.

As promised, here are pics of my Halloween pumpkins. Yeah, I know. My Hannible the Cannible pumpkin sux compared to the Sarah pumpkin that my Hubby did. Hopefully, they will scare and offend the neighbors.
