Gourmet doughnut craze gets wackier with build-your-own 'donut' shop in Irvine

Nov. 12, 2015 Updated 2:41 p.m.

Despite the Southern California invasion of Dunkin? Donuts, indie gourmet doughnut shops continue to dot the culinary landscape.

The latest to test the waters is poqetDonuts. The Irvine shop, at 17655 Harvard Ave., offers a unique twist: Customers can craft their own doughnut with glazes and toppings. The customization includes options for maple, chocolate, strawberry and plain glazes. Toppings include fresh fruit, sprinkles, chocolate chips, nuts, and shredded coconut.

Owner Fenny Yan said current trends allow diners to customize everything from tacos, burritos to pizza. Why not a doughnut?

?We offer a range of glaze options and toppings to satisfy a variety of palates. I tell my guests if they don?t see something they like, to create something they love,? she said.

Poqet, pronounced ?pocket,? also sells a variety of signature cake and yeast doughnuts. Flavors include tiramisu, maple bacon, burnt pistachio creme brulee and a strawberry vanilla custard malasada.

Poqet?s culinary team has 30 years experience in the doughnut industry. The shop is making custards, fillings, glazes and batters daily with top-shelf ingredients. Yan owns a doughnut shop in Dana Point. Her pastry chef used to work for Ralph Brennan?s Jazz Kitchen in Downtown Disney and at the Honda Center, both in Anaheim.

Poqet joins the ever-growing gourmet doughnut scene in Orange County, which is home to Sidecar Doughnuts in Costa Mesa, Donut Bar in Fountain Valley and Zombee Donuts in Fullerton. These premium players have opened as East Coast giant Dunkin? Donuts has prepared to conquer the West. To date, the chain has opened three restaurants in Orange County, with the latest opening Tuesday in Westminster.

On Saturday the shop, which has been open for a couple of weeks, will host a grand opening celebration. The first 100 guests will get a free doughnut after the shop opens at 9 a.m. Ten percent of the day?s sales will benefit The Irvine Public School Foundation, which provides financial support for students of the 33 schools in the Irvine Unified School District.

Doughnuts are easy to make. I make doughnut holes. Shake 'em in brown paper lunch sacks with powdered sugar or cinnamon-sugar. Else glaze them, add sprinkles, etc. Super duper cheap, super easy, and very, very fresh. $2 per doughnut? Please. You can buy 2 lbs. of flour for that and produce dozens of doughnuts.

... claims Mr. 15,908 TI Posts. If only you had a doughnut for each post.
I can post on TI from anywhere... not so much for making a donut.

But, as Irvine Dream alluded to, I can also eat a donut anywhere.

[It's] super easy...

Okay. This latest conversation confirms my earlier suspicion that you're not really interested in the hows and whys, but rather, it's just about seeking validation. That's why I walked away earlier. I'm fine with helping brainstorm things or giving input when asked. Just not interested in pointless bickering especially when it turns derogatory. We're both better than that. You're welcome to go spend all of your money on doughnuts if you want. You do you and I'll do me. Is there anything left to discuss?

You are not recognizing that you have more time at home than most of us... or at least than me.

That's not bickering, that's fact. Something you did not address in that thread you seem to be irritated about (which was also my point about eating out vs cooking... time/cost/effort).

I can't whip up a donut while I'm driving in my car somewhere if I get the urge to eat one (which is often)... but I can surely stop by a store and buy one.

And what is derogatory about my responses? You have more time for these things than I do... fact. Seems like you are taking this harder than intended.

We need a blind taste test to settle this dispute on whether making our own donuts is better than store bought...... So Cal vs. Krispy Cr?me vs. Dunkin Donuts vs Donut Star vs Store Bakery vs some boutique shop.

I could have had a whole lot of Taco Bell. Bought a dozen and it was $40.

You paid $40/dozen!?! You're kidding. I thought $25, tops. You're a dream customer. For $40, I'll bake 4 dozen, sprinkle them with edible gold, meticulously gift wrap each one in tissue paper, secure with a bow and a kiss, drive them over, hand-deliver them myself while still warm, and fan you while you eat them. Then I'll say buh-bye and spend the remaining $30 at the Spectrum.
