As part of our bedtime routine, we read a couple books to our son.  He's three.  So this thread is geared to that 3-5 year range.  Here's a few of our favorites, please post yours.

The Question  Those that drew up back East or North will understand.  We like stories with big vibrant graphics.

Sofa Boy  A little dark about boy playing video games so much he merges with the couch.

Bad Kitty Christmas  An alphabet Christmas story about a lonely old lady who has led a rich life adopted by the family because of the cat.  Minor warning, there is a passing reference to a same sex couple and their child, if that's an issue for you, you'll want to pass, the majority of low reviews refer to it.

Steam Train Dream Train The children's view of the perfect toy train.

Goodnight, Goodnight, Construction Site  All the work 'trucks' in the construction site go to bed.

Dinosaurs Love Underpants  Obviously not historically accurate, but cute. :-)

Our two favorites for the 3-7 range kids are either a "read to" book:

"Princess Prunella and The Purple Peanut", Margaret Atwood.

A tart tongue twister, but the kids loved it.

and a "read with" book:

"What do people do all day?", Richard Scarry.

We must have read it 10,000 times with ours.

That's good to see there are decent parents on TI that read books to their kids vs leaving your one year old kid with an iPad. (another post I just read)

My 3year old plays with the iPad for 20-30 minutes every night and then we read him books for 10-15 minutes and then he goes potty and goes to bed.

His favorite book right now is something about machines.

I think you need to do both for balance and so that we can do other things at night.  My 21 month old daughter sometimes wants to just play around with Kindle Freetime apps and videos.  But there are times that she don't want the kindle at all and instead will grab her books and ask us to read for her and she can be very persistent that she wants to read books (she will ignore the kindle at all or any other toys we give her).

So I take it you will not be getting this for Christmas, then???

We came across a series of children's books about famous artists published by Barrons.  Most are written/illustrated by Laurence Anholt and more info is on his site.

There are some others as well.  I haven't found a place that lists them all so here they are:
Camille and the Sunflowers (Anholt)
The Magical Garden of Claude Monet (Anholt)
Degas and the Little Dancer (Anholt)
Leonardo and the Flying Boy (Anholt)
Matisse The King of Color (Anholt)
Cezanne and the Apple Boy (Anholt)
Picasso and the Girl with the Ponytail (Anholt)
Papa Chagall, Tell Us a Story (Anholt)
Renoir and the Boy with Long Hair (Wax/Lane)
Rembrandt and the Boy Who Drew Dogs (Blaisdell/Lane)
Rockwell: A Boy and His Dog (Spiotta-DiMare/Miller)
Suzette and the Puppy (Sweeney/Wharton)

We visited the Norton Simon Museum a few weeks ago and it was exciting to see the work of some of these artists.  The Little Dancer of Fourteen Years there is just as described in the book and our little one enjoyed that quite a bit.

Some of the books are better than others and not all of the stories flow well.  But overall, we  enjoy them a lot and they are in the regular mix of books we read at bedtime.
