Bought a few board games to the kids over Christmas.
Here are a few recos.

1.Word on the Street: Highly recommended board game for kids who can spell. (Actually those who do phonic spelling will also have fun- the game doesn't have any vowels) Helps enhance vocabulary too.
2. Qwirkle: pattern loving Kindergarteners will love it more than the older kids.
3. Finders Keeper: It's our family favorite- takes only a few minutes to play, easy to understand for all ages.
4. Othello: A good change from checkers and chess that get a little hard for younger kids.
5. Thinkfun chocolate fix: It's for the older kids, they can play alone too, but I don't think they would. Sort of like sudoku.
6. Story cubes: Spurs creativity and good to keep in the car to entertain the little ones. I use it between pick ups.

Please add anything else your kids love/ keeps them entertained.

Aside: Pictionary was invented here in OC. The creator was from Villa Park.

I prefer chess. It helped my bide some time when I spent two years in Eastern Europe during my care-free 20's.
I was still learning the local language, but the game helped bridge some communication gaps.
(This was back before the internet was invented by Al Gore)

My 7-year-old is getting pretty good at it, as well.
