By the way, if anybody else from TI attends and wants to come say hello, PM me, and maybe I'll give you my Row & Seat number or we'll exchange them to make the stalking fair & square.  (This is only for people I've actually communicated with on the site. Lurkers need not apply.) My family will be with me, so, be nice.

I'm surprised to see nobody else has shared their 4th of July plans. There is lots to see and do in O.C. Nobody going to the Newport Harbor Boat Parade? No high school fireworks? Nothing? Maybe there are not enough Americans on T.I. to celebrate?

In any case, I'll be making snacks to take to the show. I do this in 2 versions, regular and Red Hot! - yes, the cinnamon candy. Here is my recipe in case you want some. It is so much better fresh than prepackaged from the store. Yes, it's a real Amish recipe, no joke. (Iho is unfazed, I'm sure!)

SoCal's Amish Caramel Corn

(Okay to halve if desired)

Ingredients:

2 sticks butter
2 C. packed brown sugar
1/2 C. light corn syrup
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. vanilla extract
2 bags of Kettle corn, popped - approx. 5 quarts (may substitute with regular popcorn)

Method:

Preheat oven to 250 degrees Fahrenheit. Prepare 2 large, shallow pans (i.e. jellyroll pan) w/ cooking spray or a Silpat. Spread the popped popcorn onto the pans, trying not to include unpopped kernels.

Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir in brown sugar, corn syrup, and salt. Stir constantly until boiling. Boil for 4 minutes, while continuing to stir. Remove from heat. Stir in baking soda and vanilla extract. The mixture will be light and foamy. Immediately pour over popcorn, dividing evenly between the two pans. Stir to coat. Don't worry about coating it thoroughly at this point.

Bake 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes. Cool completely. Break into pieces. Store in an airtight container or Ziplock or cellophane baggies.

the Red Hot Caramel Corn will be a first for me. This is not my pic but it will look something like this. I plan to put both batches (separately) in cute red & white striped baggies for the 4th.

I'm debating between the lawn area or the seating areas.  We'll have extended family in tow, so a steep climb is out of the question.  Do like the picnic idea though.

Also considering the Irvine HS venue, but a few dollars more and I get Big Bad Vodoo Daddy.. hmmm

Yeah, I feel like it's a "2-fer". I had checked the venue just for the fireworks and was surprised to see it would be a good concert, too. Last year, I considered going for the fireworks but the entertainment was nothing special. I don't even remember who or what was playing. Some no-name. I thought it was too pricey just for fireworks, not worth it, passed. Happy to see better offerings this year. I was listening to the radio a couple days ago and heard the station using these tickets as prizes.

:'( Qwerty, why do you have to live in Not Foothill Ranch? I would ding-dong-ditch you a bag of SoCal's famous Amish caramel corn.

We looked at foothill ranch and really liked area but my commute would have increased to 1.5 hours. My wife was working in irvine at the time. But now she has a much longer drive. If we were in foothill ranch she wouldn't have taken her new job which is a considerably better comp package than her previous job.

So the more central location in Tustin opens more career options without having to relocate.

Thanks though. I would have enjoyed eating that

PS9,

Did you end up going last night?

I was surprised how geriatric the crowd was!! Like 85-90%! I guess those are the main fans of the P.S. orchestra and also swing music. A few hipsters, a few families but not much. I thought there would be more people my age group reminiscing music from their high school days. So many of the old people were getting sloshed, too. It wreaked of drunken old people. Mr. SoCal said it smelled like a combination of wine & bad breath. I partially agreed -- wine and old lady perfume / ointments. We concurred on the wine part. The lady in front of me was nursing the bottle all night long along with her entire group, then fell asleep on her husband's shoulder through the loud music.

I thought the fireworks were pretty good. Probably one of the best fireworks shows I've seen. However, Mr. SoCal thought it was short (I agree), too low in the sky. We could see 2 other fireworks show in the distance that he thought were better than the one we paid for. I liked that ours had some types of fireworks I had never seen before. But I don't get out much.

BBVD was a little under-whelming, imo. The showmanship was meh. Sound quality was meh. The songs were pretty good of course. But I can watch those on Youtube for free. And although we had pretty good seats, better than 60% of the house, the stage felt small and distant. It was yet another reminder that the best seat in the house is the T.V.! At home! For freee!!

Irvine Amphitheater would not be my first choice for a future Independence Day celebration. Their facilities are desperately in need of repairs / renovations. You would think with the ticket prices being what they are, and having a 16,000 head capacity, they could splurge to repair water damage which caused exposed mold in their restrooms. But I guess we won't have to worry about that when it is demolished: http://www.ocregister.com/articles/park-372892-amphitheater-irvine.html

Really? We thought it was because of Irvine Amphitheater's small fallout area. The shows in the distance looked higher.

You are correct.

It depends on the distance of the display to the spectators. Something like 100 feet per inch.

I was quoting a specific Irvine display but it varies by venue.

Didn't go, the climb and walk from parking lot might be too much for MIL, and they didn't want to see BBVD :(

Actually stayed home

If it's any consolation -- for future reference, they do offer a "shuttle" i.e. golf cart, iirc, to take handicapped / elderly people up to the top. Their emails said there would be a long line but I saw a fairly short one. I'd say about 10 people. I hope this helps.

Here are some pics from the event:

Forgot to mention that the great-great-grandson of Francis Scott Key was there as a special guest. As you know, Francis Scott Key was the author of The Star Spangled Banner. The pic is included. The ol' man is 90. It seemed like he had one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel.  :-X
