Better broadband options for Irvine? Fios maybe?

In Irvine, Cox has a monopoly on cable and ATT seems to not care very much about its DSL service, so do Irvine residents deserve better Internet broadband options? If only Verizon would bring its Fios service Southeastward from Huntington Beach...

I have ATT DSL .The speed is very very slow and at times it comes to snail speed.I subscibe to economy package at 15$

Wanted to try out the pro package but not sure whether it would worth extra bucks! Is there any satisfied ATT customer?

i live in HB and i have fios. 15.5k down and 2k up. for 39.99 a month. not tooo shabby, but time warner has the same thing same price but they only advertise 8k-10k but in reality you will get 14k down and 2k up since they use the same fiber optic line. COX is pretty expensive i heard for crappy service.

what i really want is the 30k down package. then i can Download all the blu-ray movies.

I just moved back to Irvine, from Costa Mesa. I brought my AT&T DSL service with me, but It is about 10 times slower than what I had in Costa Mesa. Granted, they had just upgraded the lines to fiber optic there. But a song that took 30 seconds to download now takes 5 minutes. I also get a lot of stuttering on streaming videos, which I never had before. But from what it sounds like here, I wont be getting much better service from Cox if I switch? I find it amazing that a city that has a lot of tech business could have such miserable internet service.

Trust - DSL speed depends mainly on distance to the CO. You probably used to live close to one in Costa Mesa and now live further away. Or your line needs repair.

I have Cox and I have no complaints. I switched from AT&T DSL and it's much faster and very reliable. It probably helps that half my community is still dirt. Don't give up on COX. Try it out. They have great deals for new subscribers if you negotiate. I'm getting phone, Cable w/ HD, 2 DVRs, HBO, and Internet for 85 a month for first 6 months. If you don't like it, you can just cancel with no penalty.

Cox cable is OK depending on your needs. If you use BT they have a 3-strikes policy to MPAA complaints. They also block ports so you can't run web servers from home.

I used to use Speakeasy DSL but it was expensive.

Hosting is so cheap now momo, no need to run web servers from home any longer. For $5/month you can get a sweet deal now:

Heck, the $5/month is probably less than the cost of the electricity to run a server at home!

I have been on Cox cable since 2001 and through-put has always been good. It was shaky in terms of uptime early on, but has been rock solid for the past few years.

I'm pretty unhappy with Cox internet service but maybe I'm blaming the wrong company or maybe that's the way it's supposed to be, BUT here is my situation, maybe someone can tell me if I'm doing something wrong?

In my old house all I had to do was connect the Ethernet cable from the Time Warner cable modem to my Cisco router, and plugged in all Ethernet cables (say three of them) to the Cisco router, and boom, I had Internet connections for three computers in my room.

Now in Irvine (a new IAC community) I connected the Ethernet cable from Cox's cable modem to the same router and plugged in three Ethernet cables to the router, but I only get an Internet connection to one computer at a time. Basically it doesn't seem like the router works with the Cox cable modem. When I bypass the router by unplugging the Ethernet cable from one computer and plugging the cable into a second computer, the second computer doesn't connect to the Internet. I have to unplug the Ethernet cable from the first computer, power off the cable modem for 30 seconds, power it back on, then plug the Ethernet cable to the second computer, and only then will I get Internet service on the second computer. I called Cox and they said that's indeed the way it is, the cable modem "remembers" what computer it's plugged into and I have to power it down before I can plug the Ethernet cable from the cable modem into another computer.

That seems ridiculous. At my old house, I remember being able to just unplug the Ethernet cable from one computer and plug into a second computer and get Internet service. Is Cox right about this, or are they using cable modems without the functionality I'm used to at my old house or am I just doing something wrong?

Every cable modem I've ever had has required me to power-cycle it when swapping out whatever device is immediately behind it. You're only allowed one IP address assigned to one MAC address unless you pay extra. Perfectly normal.

The router "hides" these machines from the cable network; The cable modem "sees" only the public-facing side of the router. Why yours isn't working is anyone's guess.

I still use rabbit ears. Works fine.

Cox was going to charge me $24/mos. for the 13 channels. Sheesh. My rabbit ears antenae picks up all 13 channels. Those crooks.

reason,

every business has overhead to pay...expect them to give it for free is just unreasonable.

I am very happy with Cox internet, and I had them since 2000. However, I found their cable to be a lot more expensive then direct TV. I am just too lazy to switch.

I do not understand why cable companies get to block out whole areas from competition. Why can I not chose Time Warner or some other cable company and have to use Cox. It would like saying one could only subscribe to AT&T in Irvine and only T mobile in Los Angeles.

Dish is not a real option for us since we do not have an unobstructed view to the Southern sky.

Slightly off topic... What do you pay per month for Cox?

They just increased my cable $1. It's only a dollar but why don't they tell us this? I just checked my bill and it was a dollar more than usual. I was thinking of calling them.

One thing I don't understand is that Cox serves Irvine, a city with a lot of Chinese, but they only have 1 channel with Chinese content, while Alhambra has a similar percentage of Chinese but Charter has about 8-10 Chinese channels. It'd be nice if I could pick Charter to provide my cable service than Cox.

The 1 Chinese channel I get (channel 109) has horrible audio quality. It sounds like they are underwater and I noticed the usual programming has changed. They now show ads at the 9 PM slot instead of the usual variety shows (at least they did last week).

Rob, we pay between $125 - $130 a month, and I feel robbed. There's nothing exceptional about their service, there's no flexibility with the plans they offer, and their customer service people don't seem to really have customer satisfaction as their end goal. >:(

My folks have DirecTV and have had no problems with them, but seeing as how I'm vain, I kinda don't like having a dish stick out from my patio like what I see in the other apartments.
