Apartments without carpeting?

Hello everyone,

I am moving to Irvine in early August and I am looking for an apartment that has either NO carpeting or very little carpeting. I have 2 cats and allergies to dust mites, and both of these make carpet undesirable.

My search has been pretty unfruitful- all of the places I have seen say hardwood floors or stained concrete, and then come to find out its only in the kitchen and bathroom.

Are there any places that are completely, or almost, carpet free? I'd also like a washer dryer in unit if possible, and a gym, and a pool. Clean, no pests or roaches. I don't mind if there are college kids, as long as its not the type of place where they pee/puke in the elevators on the weekends, if you know what I mean.

Ideally, I'd like a loft, but there don't seem to be many lofts or warehouse-style apartments in the area, and the people renting out their Santa Ana Art lofts have been very unresponsive.

Thanks in advance,

nemoly11

Palmeras and (I believe) Woodbury Court have near-full wood options. Some of them are only wood in the entry/kitchen, but others have wood throughout except in the bedrooms. My Palmeras unit is like this, and my allergies have been reduced greatly since moving here.

I know this may not be your first choice, but when I moved into my IAC they said we could do some remodeling if we run it by them. I asked what she meant and she gave the example of replacing the carpet with hard flooring. I guess some people do this. It's just something to think about.

To get hardwood floors and a washer/dryer inside the unit you're probably better off looking for a private rental.

Have you considered renting a private condo or home rather than an apartment without carpet? You might have better luck with one of those, since most apartments seem to be carpeted.

Camden on Main and Jamboree does the concrete throughout, I thought.

You can contact the IAC info center (http://www.rental-living.com/InfoCenter/) and they will filter through their 70odd communities and let you know if any come with hard surface flooring. You will most likely be looking at a studio or 1 bed. Larger floor plans with hard flooring are harder to come by.

Thanks everyone. I have been looking at private rentals. Do you have any suggestions as to where I should look besides Craigslist?

MLS...PM me with your parameters and e-mail and I'll send you MLS rental listings that meet your requirements.

may I add that the concrete is stained dark brown... very modern, cold, and totally not homey..

I think it looks pretty cool. I am pretty sure they only have it on the ground floor units, as it would make too much noise in the upper floors.

Yep, after taking a closer look at Camden, it says they have concrete flooring on the first level, a mix of hardwood and berber on the second and third levels, and slate flooring on top floor lofts.

They look very nice- do they ever have specials? They seem a little pricey compared to other units that seem just as nice.

I do understand that the concrete doesn't seem homey to most, but compared to sniffling from the dust mites (or constantly taking medicine for it), and trying to vacuum up cat hair from carpeting, it sounds soooo lovely to me :)

Also, one more question- a lot of the places I have been contacting have been saying that their specials end soon, and leasing is limited, yadda yadda. . . I know this is normally just their way of trying to pressure you, but do you know if specials usually continue to run through august? Or since so many UCI kids are coming back, do the specials diminish for awhile?

Thanks for your recommendations folks!

Specials do end all the time. Specials typically last a few days to a week. But in this kind of market, as soon as one special ends, a new one begins. Often times the new special is the same as the old special. Sometimes it is a little different. It all depends on how the occupancy at the property is trending.

I would fully expect that you can get specials at Camden. I haven't specifically looked but I would guess you could at least get the first month free, maybe the first 2 months.

I just called, and it looks like Camden is offering 2 months free. That makes them pretty comparable to other places.

I also wanted to thank you all for all of your help- I now have 5 complexes and a couple of private condos to look at when I get to Irvine! I really appreciate all of your advice.

No problem, the toughest choice will be selecting where you want to live. Keep us posted.
