We are (hopefully) moving to Irvine from Toronto, Canada. We are coming for a visit in early December and would really appreciate recommendations on neighbourhoods we should consider moving to. Top priority is high school for our daughter -- looks like Northwood might be the best choice? We work at home so commuting is not an issue but would prefer to be able to walk/bike to stores, restaurants, etc.

We could buy, but couldn't really afford to spend more than about $700,000. It seems like there are real tax advantages to buying, but is the real estate market inflated? We would probably want to sell in 5-6 years or so once our daughter finishes high school. Ideally we would be buying townhouse or detached, with some outdoor space even if just a patio.

Appreciate any advice on great neighbourhoods and buy vs rent...

Northwood high school would be great.  All of the high schools here are great.  Consider that a new high school will be the best - Portola high - because they can hand pick the teachers who are willing to work extra hard to open a new school.  Look at Portola Springs too.  Quiet and not the smell of the landfill that folks here talk about.  Newport Coast is built on TOP OF the old Turtle rock landfill and there is no problem.

I would highly recommend renting versus buying especially if you are coming in from out of town and have never lived in Irvine.  Call it a cheap preview of the neighborhood that you are targeting.  The real estate market is cooling off and I don't see prices picking up in the next 12-18 months.
