IRVINE ? A 75-year-old Peruvian woman who was visiting her daughter and family was walking the dog Tuesday when she was beaten by a naked neighbor, police said
Neil Fitzsimons said he moved his wife and two children into a Woodbridge condo on Rockwood two months ago with the hopes of prospering in the ?safest city in the U.S.A,? so it came as a shock when he received calls that his 75-year-old mother-in-law was attacked in the street around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday just 15 yards from their front door, he said.
?I heard he was sitting on top of her naked and for some reason grabs the dog by the leash and spins it around like a whirlybird,? Fitzsimons said.
When police arrived, they found Craig Andrew Ledbetter, 51 of Irvine, naked and ?acting aggressively and holding a stick,? while Fitzsimons? mother-in-law was injured a short distance away in the street, police Lt. Bill Whalen said.
Officers used a Taser to subdue Ledbetter, who lives nearby and resisted arrest, before taking him into custody.
The 75-year-old woman, who lives in Peru when she is not visiting family, was taken to a hospital where she remained Wednesday.
?He beat her up, gave her a broken arm; she?s hemorrhaging and bleeding,? Fitzsimons said. ?I just got back from the hospital and her eyes are swollen shut, she can?t see anything.?
The family dog, a miniature poodle named Duke, ran away after the attack and was found late Tuesday night by Irvine City Animal Control officers near I-405 on Culver Drive.
?(Duke) was shaking, but he?s OK,? Fitzsimons said.
Ledbetter was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault, elder abuse and animal cruelty, all felonies, along with misdemeanor resisting arrest.
Police said this was not the first time they had contacted Ledbetter on Tuesday.
?We received calls about him first around 10:30 a.m. because he was acting bizarrely,? Whalen said.
Officers found him near Jeffrey Road and Alton Parkway, but did not have ?the means to arrest him,? Whalen said.
Ledbetter was booked into Orange County jail and was held in lieu of $50,000 bail. He was expected to appear in court Thursday, according to jail records.
Fitzsimons said doctors are still evaluating his mother-in-law?s health, but the family is hoping for a full recovery.
