College applications discussion

NEW -> Contingent Buyer Assistance Program
My first manager was Swiss and a competitive fencer. Phenomenal engineering manager.
OCC had fencing classes in the mid 1980's. Great fun using a foil. Don't want to get hit with a saber (not lightsaber.…) though. They will leave a welt.

At CSU Fullerton they gave beginning saber class padded/foam practice sabers back in early 2000's. Not sure about now.

A father posted this last week and recently the Reddit mods deleted the post - can't have people openly discussing these things I guess??
Fortunately I had an old tab open. There were some good comments here though many have been deleted around how the kid had applied to only top schools and UCs (which apparently aren't easy for out of state students to get acceptance?). Anyways, I'm curious to get TI thoughts/comments on this.

Can blame made up DEI or affirmative action either so now What? lol

For sports it depends on the college and major. You can talk to your own friends and coworkers to confirm but it is generally an advantage for admissions.

But JC or UMass and then transfer after 1 or 2 years is always an option and an easier route, esp if your kid can't get in as a freshman.

My kid thinks they can get into a 4-year easier after a gap year. I am doubtful especially because they did zero academics during that time but I'll let them learn that lesson on their own.

I still don't think traditional college is the answer anymore. It helps but I've come across people who were scholars and had post grad degrees but suck at people management and business acumen and then others with less formal education and are brilliant not just technically but emotionally intelligent. But maybe my own perception is skewed. :)
