Not familiar with Ozturk so I had to do some digging. A lot of articles omit these interesting tidbits. She is alleged to be a Hamas supporter and to have a history of involvement in pro-Hamas protests. No details on her level of participation unlike Khalil who actively recruited and organized. She got her masters from Columbia but couldn't find a date of graduation so no clue if she was part of the 2023 protests at Columbia. She didn't only write an op-ed like many media outlets would like you to believe. She will have her day in court where the facts get laid out and an immigration judge will make a decision. Her bond was denied as the immigration judge considered her a flight risk and a danger to the community. For the judge to make this determination there may be more to her story that is unknown to us at this point.

Hamas has been declared a terrorist organization by the US since 1997. If you want to publicly support a terrorist organization and you are not a US Citizen you run the risk of being deported. These protests have involved the illegal occupation of property, vandalism and intimidation of other students. The first amendment has exceptions for exactly this kind of situation where there are no free speech protections.

Some relevant items not presented in the AP article. Gomez was one of two passengers in a car going from Georgia to Florida on April 16th. The driver was pulled over for speeding and did not have a driver's license. From the article "The arrest record the trooper filed states that Lopez-Gomez had said he was in the country illegally but that he had handed over his ID. There was no mention of the Social Security card on the arrest report. However, Lopez-Gomez told the Phoenix he had shown the trooper a copy of his Social Security card and Georgia state ID." It's possible a rogue state trooper lied on his report. I don't see why Gomez would tell the trooper he was here illegally. Regardless, due to the TRO on DeSantis' February bill the trooper should not have detained Gomez or the other passenger. The driver can be detained in Florida for driving without a license.

Abrego Garcia, our most beloved immigrant, was pulled over in 2022 by Tennessee Highway Patrol for speeding. He had seven other men in a Suburban (that was not registered to him) and he told the THP officer he was bringing these men from Texas to Maryland for construction work. The officer suspected Garcia was engaged in human trafficking since there was no luggage and the men all gave Garcia's Maryland address as their home. However, Garcia and the men were not detained as the officer was told by a higher up to let them go. In my opinion, Abrego Garcia and the other men should have been detained in that incident while an investigation was made. Human trafficking is a federal crime and the laws predate Trump. It's really unfortunate what the previous administration allowed to happen with illegal immigrants; and when 56% of people polled are in favor of deporting all illegal immigrants, that tells you a lot of people are frustrated and unhappy with the situation.

I suspect you will see a lot more articles like this in the future. A narrative is being built to push fear among people that everyone is subject to deportation in Trump's America. The sad reality is that if this happened under Biden's administration, AP and other legacy news outlets wouldn't even cover this Lopez Gomez story. I don't know who your friends are but I would advise them take what the media says with a grain of salt.

Why even bring up Garcia in your counter? it's not the media that is creating this fear, it's the administration because they are skirting due process and ignoring judicial orders. The prez himself is even calling judges incompetent so it makes people feel even the law can't protect them.

I use Garcia as an example of when it’s appropriate for LE to detain people and investigate.

You must have forgotten about Biden’s administration skirting due process and circumventing judicial orders (student loan forgiveness for one)? So many of Trump’s critics today were the same people openly telling the Biden administration to ignore the Roe v Wade and student loan decisions. As for denigrating judges, do you ever criticize the left when they do the same? Remember when protestors were in front of Kavanaugh’s home in an attempt to intimidate him? It’s a federal offense to protest in front of SC justices home yet no criticism from the left about police not arresting anyone. Imagine the howls you’d be hearing if people protested in front of Boasberg’s home. Schumer was one of many elected officials on the left spewing vitriol, which the media repeated ad nauseam; and as a result Nicholas Roske traveled to Maryland in an attempt to kill Kavanaugh. How about the nasty things Biden said about certain right leaning Supreme Court justices, including right to their face at his State of the Union speech?
